D&D 5E Are you ready for a new edition of D&D?

It's a simple question, with a not-so-simple answer. Are you ready for a new edition of D&D?

In my case, I am. I played 3E extensively throughout it's lifetime, likewise 4E. Pathfinder I played for a year, and at this point the problems with all three systems are enough to make me welcome a new approach.

However, I know this isn't universal. My friend Greg has played nowhere enough 4E. He's still got character concepts he wants to try, and the system still has a lot of "life" for him.

The reality of publishing might drive the new edition, but where are you on your personal D&D journey?

I'm ready for a new version of D&D, but at the same time, I have no problems going back to the older ones. I'll happily jump into a game of 4e, Pathfinder or 3.5.

Mixed thoughts. On one hand, I like the general direction they are going with the game; and many of the changes to the mechanics. On the other hand, I am not sure I am interested in investing time and money into learning and mastering a new system. Plus, if I do decide to go with a new system, I am not sure if I like D&D Next better than Adventurer Conqueror King.

I am ready for some kick ass adventures. I use PF because I have tons of experience with 3E. Its not the perfect system by a long shot. However, after so many years I know how to fine tune it for my tastes. I could go through that process again, but I need incentive. The Paizo adventure paths are great and keep me coming back. If adventures make there way in 5E, then my answer goes from probably not, to why not?

Hell, yeah. My group only plays 15-20 times a year, so we have to make them count. 5E provides a much smoother, quicker system than the last two or three, which allows us to get more story in per session.

Not sure but tending to not needing a new edition. I still have a 8 months or so to go with my current 4th ed campaign and I would happily play a new 4th ed campaign. But I am interested to see what DDN plays like - especially if shorter combats can be made to square with some meaningful tactical depth..

i would like to think i'm ready for a version of D&D i can actually enjoy.

looking back on my years of D&D playing, RPGs in general really, i've had lots of fun, but the most of it was when we had basically put the rulebooks aside and simply played magical tea party.

basically, i like the concept of D&D and TTRPGs in general put forth: fantastic worlds, cool scenarios and the ability to interact with it all... but i find the execution, namely the mechanics, to be highly lacking. at this point most games just make me groan when we start discussing rules as they just don't feel fulfilling when in play. sometimes cumbersome, sometimes time consuming, sometimes contradictory... whatever the case i find almost all TTRPG i can remember the rules of clearly to be really bad at being good games. i'm saying this because i've played quite a few games in one-offs, but those games are just a blur in my mind.

i don't know what the final version of 5th ed is going to look like, but the last public playtest and various legends&lore columns aren't filling me with hope. i'm in a "hope for the best, expect the worst" situation with that game.

maybe 6th ed will get it right for me if 5th ed doesn't. maybe 7th ed if 6th doesn't. 8th if not 7th. i'm 28, i know what i like and i'm ready to sit down, actually play the game and feel that i've had fun with that part of the experience, not just the parts where i put away the 50$ rulebook and pretend i'm a short, drunken lout with a bad scottish accent and a warhammer.

My answer was yes. My favorite edition to date was 2nd, and I'm still hoping for something that I like better. 3rd was a lateral move, improvements were very evenly balance with stuff I didn't care for, and while 4th had a few ideas I liked, it was by far my least favorite edition.

After playing the pre-new edition for the last 21 months, I'd say yes.

Yyyes. Yes. I loved 4E but I don't find it good for the kind of game I like to run. And the kind of game WotC expected me to run, they didn't write good adventures for.

So yeah, bring on 5.
