Ready? Meaning do I want another version of D&D? Sure, if it brings something new to the table and is something I'd find fun to play. I'm probably more inclined to pick up a new game that isn't a reissue of something that's gone before before picking up a new edition of something at this point, especially D&D - I've got several versions of D&D that I don't get to play much of late and I'd rather play them where D&D is concerned.

For me, 4E still has lots of life left in it. I've got another eight or so campaigns I want to run and will endeavour to do so in the years I have left.

That said, I look longingly and lovingly at 13th Age and expect I will be running that before the year is out once I have the new 13th Age Bestiary and 13 True Ways, but 4E will still be my preferred ruleset. The fact that I am looking at 13th Age as well shows I do have an appetite for something different but, for me (IMO/YMMV), what I have seen from Next is not so much a new edition of D&D but a new edition of AD&D and that's something I am definitely not interested in going back to.

I will always be up for running or playing some Classic D&D. But I'm looking forward to running and playing 5e with folks who don't share my love for the old ways.

I've enjoyed 4th edition, but my game has just hit epic levels and I'm finding it harder and harder to not let the rules get in the way of the story, and the combats are just too long and too structured. My suspension of disbelief is strained.

But what do I want?

I'm looking forward to a game that feels more like a story and less like a series of encounters. I'm looking forward to a game where I can completely wing a combat with the monster manual supporting that. I want a game that is easy to sandbox. I want a game that is more about personalities and less about powers.

I'm looking forward to a gritty unstructured mess of a combat that is resolved in half an hour or less and characters could be at real risk of unexpected death. I want my players to feel nervous every time they go into combat because they know that it can sometimes go horribly wrong and sometimes go fantastically right.

I'm hoping that 5e gives me this and I'm feeling optimistic.

It's a simple question, with a not-so-simple answer. Are you ready for a new edition of D&D?

I am ready but the edition isn't ready yet ;)

In a sense, I am already playing it, although obviously it's not the final version, but the new "principles" are almost all already there.

On the other hand, I am not sure I am interested in investing time and money into learning and mastering a new system.

I'm currently thinking that with 5e I'll take the approach of not mastering it.

With 3e, I starting running the game with core books only, but quite soon I was buying supplements and "studying" the system, both as a player and DM.

I want a much lighter-hearted hobby today, simply because I have many other stuff I want to do in my life compared to 10 years ago. I'm going to try to stick to core only for a very long time this time, with the exception of selected campaign settings books.

Yes, I've been ready since about 2006. 4e paused that clock briefly, but once I'd (fairly quickly) decided it wasn't for me, the clock started right back up.

Maybe.

First, there's no pressure. I'm involved in 2.5 4e games which will proceed for - at least - 1-2 years. All of these games are fresh enough not to get cancelled because of some new edition. Conversions are a no-go, too.

Second, 5e couldn't answer the question "why 5e instead of an older version" up to now. Currently, the ideas of a Swords&Wizardry dungeon crawling campaign or some relatively new adventure path retrofitted to 2e appeal to me. 5e would have to give me the idea of a distinct "campaign concept" to make me want to run it.
