D&D 5E Street date for D&D Next Starter Game is July 15

I will say that at the GAMA Trade Show, WotC said the new edition would simply be Dungeons & Dragons, or D&D. No number, no Next. At the time I commented that the players, retailers, and distributors would probably still be adding a further identifier for the edition, just to avoid confusion.
My choice would not be Next.

Might as well call it what it is: D&D 5th Edition.

That said, I can see the reasoning behind calling the starter set just "D&D." But the PHB etc should be "5th edition."

Yeah, calling it a litmus test is a bit much, but if they fumble this one, I'll be a lot more skeptical about the final product.

I mean, D&D hasn't had a good starter set since the early 80's. That's crazy.

Actually, the 1991 Black Box was pretty good--it went all the way up to level 5, IIRC, and was full of neat stuff and ways to teach the game. It got a good chunk of support from TSR, too, with 3 big add-on boxes and numerous smaller modules. (And it apparently sold about half a million copies over the course of 3-5 years.)

@MerricB just mentioned elsewhere that "I've seen a report from a meeting last week that the PHB is August and the DMG is November. Both $49.99. Think we'll hear more soon.... Apparently there was a retailer's conference last week that gave that information. I'm dubious, but Red Box details were confirmed."

Now I just wonder what it's going to cost from amazon.com (was about 40% off for 4e), and if they are going to have any pdf-releases or other types of digital distribution.

I really hope the start rules includes a good adventure that isn't a railroady dungeon crawl.

Their PR dept. is certainly dropping the ball. We shouldn't be learning about new products from third parties like this.

Actually... the PR department is doing exactly what they should be doing... preparing announcements for a worldwide release to the general public. A general public of hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of potential players-- not the couple hundred ridiculous message board readers who have been scouring and speculating for months on end about when the game would be released.

Does the Disney PR department gear its advertising towards the dunderheads on Ain't It Cool's message boards that have been picking apart Guardians of the Galaxy information for a year and a half? No. Because those people already know everything they need to know. So the PR roll-out is for everyone else. And the new edition of D&D is the exact same thing. They don't need to let US know anything, because we can't actually even do anything with the information even when we get it.

So great. A handful of us on these message boards like EN World and RPG.net now know the game is being released on July 15th (before the rest of the world has found out through a full PR deluge.) Now what? Have our lives now CHANGED at all having received this information? What is now different for any of us than how we were three days ago? As far as I can tell... nothing is different. We know a date. Wonderful. Fantastic. But we can't DO anything with that information. So knowing that date doesn't actually matter. We can't buy the game early. We can't see any parts of the game that we wouldn't already see through L&L articles and the like. There is literally NOTHING different having now been given a potential date for release. And thus... I can't help but shake my head at everyone who's been getting their panties in a bunch for months on end because WotC didn't give out a release date.

WotC could have made their announcement of the game on the day of release, and NOTHING would be different that it is now. We would all get into our cars, drive to the store, and buy the game. Which is exactly what will happen even though we got the date yesterday. And is exactly what would have happened had we gotten the date back in like January (which so many people have been demanding here on the boards.) And is exactly what would have happened had they made an announcement of release on the day the open playtest closed.

Nothing is different. Nothing has changed. So having gotten the info through a 3rd party channel rather than WotC PR means absolutely jack.

well...players could start winding up games they are running or not start new ones in preparation for the D&D Next launch date so as to be ready to play it with friends and groups upon release.

It isn't earth shattering and not a big deal but might be helpful to know.
