D&D 5E Street date for D&D Next Starter Game is July 15

Never understood why the DMG cones out later.....we want to run a game, not read the PHB for months.

Perhaps to give them a little extra time to put that final polish on the books. They'll do a better job catching errors if they're not trying to get three books ready for simultaneous release.

The AD&D 2e core books were staggered by a few months as well. And let's not even get into AD&D 1e, with the MM released in 1977, the PHB in 1978, and the DMG in 1979...

Hmm. Still holding out hope that the Starter is actually "an adventure box" with pre-gens, starter rules, a 10 level adventure, and some dice.

If newbies like playing the game, they could then pick up the PHB for character creation and the DMG for creating adventures.

(Am aware this opinion is not popular.)

Yep, to me, that sounds like an awful starter set- I don't want pregens, I want to make a character. I don't want a single prewritten adventure, I want the tools to make my own. A starter set that is an adventure in disguise is just a nonstarter for me (pun intended).

Can I ask a question for those that are complaining about the contents of the Starter Set (which we don't know yet)?

Why do you need a starter set anyway???

It is definitely not being made for anyone here that reads ENWorld every day.
It's for my neice, that just asked me this weekend if I could give her DM tips because she wants to run her first game with friends.
In July, I buy her the box and and she is the happiest girl in the world.
The starter Set is and should be for those STARTING to play D&D. Not us.
If you don't like what is offered, don't buy it and wait until August so you can create your level 20 characters.

As for me, I'll buy it to support WotC and the Free D&D I've played for the last 2 years with the playtest.
$20 for 730 days worth of gaming is a pretty good deal to me.

I'd like to see a starter that looks a lot like the BECMI red box, but still encourages buyers to later go out and pick up the three core rulebooks. The starter should allow for character creation (it might or might not include pregens). It should include either the big four classes or all of them. It should include humans, elves, dwarves, and halflings. Characters created with the starter set should be every bit as complete as characters created with the phb; but I am alright with them being created with fewer options. Users of the starter box should be able to take these characters up to level 3.

The starter box should include dice, but not minis; we don't need them with this iteration, right?

The starter box should include a bestiary full of monsters that will challenge 1st through 3rd level characters.

it should include an introductory adventure that is more or less complete. It should include a second adventure that is open to a small amount of customization, and it should include a loose framework for a third adventure.
