The greekiness of your yogurt

Greek yogurt has gone from health food fad to inescapable food phenomenon in just a few short years. In record time, it has practically replaced non-Greek yogurt -- sort of. How "Greek" is the Greek yogurt we Americans have come to worship? Not so Greek after all, it turns out, at least according to a new lawsuit.

Do you guys consider "Greek" yogurt a style of yogurt or a yogurt from a particular place (Greece) or made by a particular people (hairy Greeks)?

A style of yogurt. It is just a name, like "French fries".

Yoghurt is yoghurt. I don't care whether it's Greek or anything else, as long as it doesn't try to sneak into the house in a large wooden horse.

First, the contents is different. They add milk proteins to double the amount of protein in it.

Second, ""evaporated cane juice" is sugar," is true, it just means raw sugar rather then refined sugar. still sugar.

Third, I find it tastes better.

Fourth, Oikos. I asked a friend about that word, as I tend to be a skeptic about advertising and names of products [such as dasani water by coke] I found out it is an actual Greek word. it means 'family', as in family recipe. An example of its use is Oikos Gene [as in genisis] means born of the family or started of the family. Be careful of names.

those are my thoughts. My emphasis is number 3. I prefer yoplait Greek. had some this morning, actually.

Depends on the producer. In many cases, they add milk proteins by adding... milk. Reduced water content explains the greater protein in Greek yogurts, as compared to normal.

I noticed the ones that say "Twice as much protien as regular yogurt" Also seem to have listed the extra whey protean.

Our yogurt is so Greek, it's declared war on the Turkish Delight in the 'fridge.

(Really, I just look at it as a high-protein alternative to "regular" yogurt. "Greek" is just a label. I like regular; my wife prefers Greek.)

Pretty much the reason I eat it.

I find it hilarious that my niece, 7 years old, will eat yogurt when she sees me eating it. But if I am not around she will not eat any yogurt. Her mother asked her why and she said, " 'Cause Unkla dabid eats it." That earned me a dirty look by 'mom'.
