The players stayed in character a lot more, even during combat, and that made it more fun to watch and built great character interactions quickly (I especially liked the way the guy on the far left played the noble). I think not going to moving pieces around on a map helped with that, and also sped things along. Makes me feel old when I have nearly as much D&D experience as all 5 players combined, though :)

Agreed on all counts. I kept waiting for one of them to say something like "20 years!" But I think the most veteran was 15 years? Just caught the tail end of 2e.

I also thought that they spent more time looking at each other than at their character sheets, and of course there was no map to look at. Given that this whole group, including Greg Bilsland (but excluding the very, very newbie playing the dwarf) started with 3e or 4e, I thought it was a good sign that they could drop into theater-of-the-mind. You have to imagine that most of their experience has probably been with maps and minis.
