You may have misinterpreted those rules. The DM cant just willy nilly tell you to roll (well technically he can because he can do anything). There's another stipulation: you have to roll a 1. Only on that 1 on can a dm tell to roll wild surge... at least that's how RAW reads.

No, I don't think so. It reads that if you use the Tides of Chaos, from that moment on until you gain the Tides of Chaos power (after a full rest), each time you cast a sorceror spell that is not a cantrip, the DM can have you roll on the table.

That is a cool way to leave the manifestation of chaos in the DMs hands. You never know when chaos is going to mess with you. Then again you might roll something innocuous. Or even benficial.

And the flip side is that the DM places in your hands once more the ability to use Tides of Chaos. As you recover Tides of Chaos s/he cannot have you roll on the table anymore when you cast spells. Use Tides of Chaos again though ... and the next time you cast, the DM can have you roll again! Except, then you gain Tides of Chaos again!

I think it is VERY cool and probably loads of fun and hilarity to play!

Both abilities say "the DM can have you roll" for wild magic effects. Why "can"? Is it up to the DM?

Correct,

the GM can have you roll or not.. for example lets say that you are in a particularly epic point in your story with a lot of drama, you could had wave any random wild surge or come up with one on the fly that better fits the scene...

and when the hell did players start looking at GM in an adversarial light? trust your game masters..... if you can't... you have the wrong GM

Sounds like they tried different frequencies of occurrence for those wild magic effects, got very diverging opinions from playtesters, thus decided to leave it in the hands of each DM/group.

Perhaps it was just not possible to establish a default frequency...

DM1 likes randomness and dramatic magic, so chooses to have the Wild Mage roll d20 every time she casts a spell, and 5% of the times it triggers a wild magic effect.

DM2 wants to keep it rare and herself uses a dice to decide if the Wild Mage should roll, so the frequency is much lower.

DM3 wants to be more in charge, and requires the Wild Mage to roll only when the situation is such that a dramatic random effect could really cause some fun, save the day, or give a spin to a boring encounter.

Or, we're just reading too much and by "can" they simply mean "will" :p

EDITED: Never mind - failed my reading comprehension roll.

I was confused by the repetitiveness of Wild Magic Surge and Tides of Chaos, but I finally caught on. D'oh!

But not to waste a post, I am liking this Wild Mage, although I do miss the original 2e version where your spell could be more or less powerful. Seemed very fitting to have that sort of randomness in addition to the wacky wild surges. But I can understand people not liking that sort of variation in power levels. Might be something interesting to toy with sometime, however.

I predict nearly endless "alternative" wild magic charts ranging from beneficial to neutral to highly malicious. Based on phases of the moon so a wild mage's spells can periodically slip from one chart to another :)

Wild Mage and technology

This calls for an app. The size of the wild surge tables could bring a good feeling of how wild the effects can be. Time to learn some programing.
