D&D 5E Meld into Stone - easy long rests mid-dungeon?

I don't think I've ever lacked doing a short or long rest (with or without those names in whatever edition) because of lack of safe place to go.

Lack of rest has always been, There stuff happening RIGHT NOW!!!! hurry!

locking your self in stone isn't going to help the fact that you can't sleep 8 hours when the orcs will be at the gates in 4.

While other stuff going on has been a factor, in my experiences the vast majority of things preventing rests are finding a safe place. Infiltrated the dungeon/fort/castle and now looking for a room that is safe? Good luck. The rest of the lair/dungeon/fort/castle is aware of your presence, and is out looking for you. 8 hours uninterrupted is practically impossible, and even a 1 hour short rest is a challenge.

Hold on a minute. You mean the world doesn't work like Resident Evil? Every so often there should a "safe room" where monsters can't find you. There should be a typewriter to save your progress and a trunk full of stuff that is accessible even though you left it back at the inn!! :p

Sometimes these discussions remind of an episode of Growing Pains I saw way back when. Mike was home sick from school and was watching Gilligan's Island, then went to get up to go somewhere. When he got back and turned the TV back on, he was literally in shock that the show didn't pause when he wasn't around. The idea that the world didn't put itself on pause and kept going when he wasn't around to directly impact it baffled him.

"Rest" while entombed in rock? Yeah, if I ever run a mentally disturbed PC, they might be all over that. Otherwise, I think I'd rather take my chances with the monsters (regardless of the meta-knowledge that the spell is completely safe).

Relatively safe... considering Umber Hulks, Xorn, or whatever rock-burrowing creatures in the area might be attracted to spell-caster flavored stone.

(Or does the spell describe protecting you from those sorts of things too? Don't have PHB with me.)

I just mean "accidentally buried alive" safe, extenuating circumstances aside.

Imagine trying to sleep while entombed in stone. Unsettling, even when you rationally know it's all okay.

Now, he'd be surprised that he didn't pause the TV, and then he'd rewind the show.

Thaumaturge.

And the spell lasts 8 hours. Better not oversleep.

There's nothing wrong with the idea as presented. I do agree with the thought that it isn't very necessary. If you're a 5th or 6th level party (casting level 3 spells) you will have probably sorted out this whole resting thing by now.

That said I also find monsters looking to remodel the dungeon unnecessary. If the party rests they acknowledge any natural consequences of that choice.

Uh... no.

Meld into stone quite specifically allows "You"- the caster- to meld into stone. Nothing indicates that anyone else can benefit. The range of Touch indicates that you have to touch the stone that you're going to meld into.

Not sure if people missed this, but you can't cast it on others. Compare the text of meld to stone with the text of invisibility, and it is obvious that meld into stone can only be cast on yourself.

So, the entire party will need to be able to cast the spell or they'll need their own 8 hour resting trick.
