Pathfinder 1E Razor Coast Sadness

Just FYI, but the PDF is currently on sale at the Frog Gods website for $15 instead of the normal $40. All their Razor Coast ones are temporarily on sale, plus a free Player's Guide, after their Ennies nominations.

I shouldn't have to spend $15 or ANYTHING to get a pdf to fill in for what I should already have inside my book.

Hi Dog Moon!

I've been considering buying this but from what I can see it has polarised reviews - people either really like it or don't!

I'd be interested in hearing your point of view beyond the missing pages ;)

Besides the missing pages...

So far I'm liking the book. The NPCs are all interesting and the way you can basically pick and choose your own little Adventure Path is quite unique though it does require a little bit of work beforehand to put it together. I've only done one session so far, so I can't tell you EVERYTHING, at least not yet. But I do like a lot of the flavor text though so far there hasn't been really many interesting encounters the route the players ended up taking - mainly Rogues and Fighters. But I'm sure things will pick up soon!

So for my only real problem is that I REALLY wish there were more page numbers included. And by that I mean instead of saying "See the Smuggler stats in Chapter 3" it would have been nice to say "See the Smuggler stats on page 182." EVERYTHING is done like that. I had to flip through pages trying to find the one little section constantly.

I'll try to update a little more after the coming weekend's session.

I'll be running this one too, once my PCs are higher level. It looks a little overwhelming with the different adventure tracks, so I'm going to try and sit down and figure out where everything fits together and what happens when my PCs invariably go off the rails.

Yeah, why does that always happen?

First encounter: they encounter the Dragoons who are looking for a fight. One of the players ended up killing two of them.

So of course they ran.

When talking to someone later they asked if the Dragoons always do that to new people. I told them, through the NPC that they do, to size people up and test them basically because the book says the Commandant likes to hire people who show skill and he's possibly looking for someone to take out the Dragonsmoke drug trade, so I made it seem like they were testing the PCs for that.

But the player was still just annoyed. He's like "The whole thing doesn't make any sense. Why would guards do that?" I didn't really have anything else to tell him. I think he's just annoyed because he's the only one that actually killed any Dragoons.

In my defense, I told them several times that they were the police force in Port Shaw, so it's not my fault he didn't try to pull any punches or anything.

I don't know how you usually run campaigns, but my plan is to start at level one, with PCs leaving the continent of Golarion, at Cheliax.
I'll ask them a short background explaining their motives for leaving the main continent and going on the high seas.
I'll start with a 3.0 module called "maiden voyage" where they will end up with a ship, and that will take them to Freeport. Then I will ghave them play through the original Freeport trilogy, and that should get them to level 5, and then, on to the Razor Coast.

I'm away next week but looking forward to reading what's happened when I get back :)

Many thanks!

I actually just started the group at level 4. Normally Razor Coast starts at 5, but with six players, I figured I should start a level earlier. Our group tends to prefer starting a level or two higher than level 1 and they definitely wanted to start at level 4 rather than level 1.

Which worked fine for me because I wanted to get into the Razor Coast ASAP!

Okay, time for updates!

Sadly, I STILL haven't heard anything from Frog God Games even though I sent a second email Sunday night. :(

As for the campaign, it continued interestingly. The group headed into the Cove of the Dragonsmoke supplier. The three Rogues on the ledge firing bolts down on the group with a couple of early Sneak Attack shots were difficult for the group with their limited ranged attack power. The Alchemist was ranged but despite needing a 3 to hit the enemy managed to roll a 2,1,2 to start off the combat. The group did eventually start to come back and would have defeated the Rogues except the Chimera came up at that point and breathed fire on the entire group. Obscuring Mist and flight!

One thing I noticed: there wasn't any description on how the Rogues managed to get up to that ledge! No tunnel or anything. I decided there was a rope ladder at the top.

So they prepared Fire Resistance spells and some better attack spells. Unfortunately the Rogues didn't get Sneak Attack and the second round went in much favor for the PCs.

Then came the flying Cockatrice Ambush. And holy crap these things are absolutely terrible at this level! DC 12 or suffer 1d4 Dex damage. And 1d4-2 damage. Everyone was afraid until they basically didn't do much. One person did manage to fail, however, and suffered a whopping 4 Dex damage before the birds were all slaughtered.

Then they came to the boat with 4 Enforcers. Apparently Step Up doesn't work at all when using a Polearm, so I decided to switch out their Ranseurs with Great Swords. One hit and then a crit brutally killed one of the PCs and another PC almost fell before they were put down. As some projectiles started shooting towards them they quickly fled back to town with some newfound wealth, which they'll need for the Raise Dead. Fortunately this leads them to next week's encounter with an important NPC.

So far, the group is enjoying the campaign and they like the sudden usage of Cockatrices and Chimera because we seriously couldn't remember the last time we fought these iconic monsters.

Also had a great moment where this Halfling Thief attempted to rob an elderly Gnome where two guards were laughing at the sight of the little people. One of the PCs, a Halfling Gnome [I have a creative house rule regarding Base Race + Origin Race], stepped in, attempting to rob the Thief despite the absolute lack of any weapon. Hilarity ensued and eventually the Thief fled.

I am liking some of these little extra flavor bits. Unfortunately, it seems like most of these are used in the very beginning in order to provide a little introduction to the feeling of Port Shaw as well as to gauge interest in what encounters to throw at the PCs. I don't really see any of these bits of flavor further on. Hopefully there will be but if not I'll have to try to add some. [These flavor encounters don't have stats or anything and aren't supposed to do anything but add flavor to the campaign; might have to do something like this for my Adventure Path I'm writing and hoping one day to publish].

Well, third session was tonight. The group was off to a terrible start by the Chuul gnawing on the animal companion in the water and a couple of critical hits by Muskets (d12 x4, ouch!)

Been kind of a struggle for them the last couple of weeks because they are missing 2 people.

Anyway, still haven't heard anything from Frog God Games, unfortunately about my book with the missing pages. Been two full weeks and I've sent two emails, one per week. Maybe I'll send my third one tonight... or maybe I'll just stop caring, I don't know. Either they don't read their emails or they just don't care. :(
