Chess... That's right, I said Chess

Back when I still played chess from time to time I also enjoyed watching games. Since I stopped playing, not so much. My interest waned when I reached a point where I would have had to memorize moves (or even better whole matches) to get better playing it. Too much work for too little fun.

I guess the wierd thing is, I'm getting beaten by players executing a program (series of moves) rather than one who is actually thinking about what to do next from the current state of affairs.

I have no doubt I played it wrong/looked at it wrong, but I don't like the way Jhaelen describes.

Not sure I quite follow you.

Are you saying that you are playing on the internet and that people are secretly using chess engines against you? Or do you mean that they are using memorized lines against you?

The latter. Memorized moves are a program. I am a programmer, who would rather write a program to play chess than play chess.

In the end, though I know how to play, I do not grasp chess at a deep enough level to do well at it.

I would like to say, there are many different levels of chess that someone can achieve.

A friend of mine wasn't interested in competition or becoming a master and all that nonsense. He did however have enough interest, and thought it would be cool, to just know enough to beat his friends, family and work associates over a lunch time game etc. lol

I told him that it was very easy, for absolutely anyone, to do that. And so I pointed him in the right direction.

That was many years ago, and to this day he is still happy at that level of play, as he wins 5 out of 6 games against them.

But yes. In the end, some degree of of interest is required.

I have played Chess from time to time. There just is really not that much call for it for me anymore. I have mostly played against my Dad, but there is not really any point now: I have beaten him at least thirty games straight.

Heh. That thread inspired me to design Faerie Chess, which adds spellcasting to a variant chess game. It's not a full-on RPG, though -- I have plans to write an eventual expansion for campaign play that will have RPG-like elements.

Hey Olgar.

One word... Awesome !

I've only had a chance to skim over it, but, very nice job.

I am very much going to learn this game. I also want to use it in my D&D 5th campaign.

This would be great with D&D minis.

Thank you for sharing this.
