From pg 22 of the basic player's handbook:
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier

The proficiency bonus in this case is +2 and the wisdom modifier is +4. Now you do the math: 2+4=?

He did say ability modifier not ability+prof.

You're not using your spell attack modifier here. There's no proficiency bonus involved.

From the 5e wiki on Cure Wounds (http://engl393-dnd5th.wikia.com/wiki/Cure_Wounds):

Cure Wounds
1st-level evocation
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous

A creature you touch regains a number of hit points equal to 1d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier. This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the healing increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 1st.

We are using the spell attack modifier: "1d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier"

No, "spellcasting ability modifier" refers to the ability modifier for intelligence, wisdom or charisma, whichever ability the character uses for spellcasting. No proficiency bonus involved.

It appears that I misinterpreted "spellcasting ability modifier" as "spell attack modifier". I see now that "spellcasting ability modifier" = int/wis/char bonus. Now I have to go and change how I calculate my healing.
