So under the rules for Elven Trance, it says that Elves can go into Trance instead of falling asleep, and then it gives you all the rules for Trancing.

Based on the wording, can my Elven Barbarian choose to sleep instead of Trance? Or is he just Edward Norton from Fight Club, where it's not gonna happen? Is Trancing mandatory, or is Trancing just a useful ability?

Think it depends on the campaign world, I have seen the fact that elves don't dream be used as plot devices before so it will vary from game to game I think.

And the trance is different for every elf too. Our deranged high elf fighter repeatedly stabs a pillow for 4 hours.

Is that what the kids are calling it these days? :D

The elf in my group for the first session wanted his trance to be while he played an instrument like the Didgeridoo. The instrument was found destroyed the next day. Three of the party members swear that it took its own life by jumping off of a large cliff.

:) Yeah, except it is a she, and she uses a dagger. And after she crit the dire^H^H^H^H Giant boar and cut its head off, she tossed the head in a sack and uses that when they are on the road.
