After 3rd and before 6th.

This gets you ritual caster, arcane recovery, action surge, second wind, and an extra attack by 7th level total.

From there just level for whatever you want to focus on: Spells (eldritch knight 6 / wizard 14) or combat (EK 19 / wizard 1)

I also read somewhere the EK 6 > Wizard 14 was a very good build. I like the progression: start off as a Fighter, dabble a bit in wizardry (EK levels), then decide that's the way to go for you, and advance as a Wizard the rest of the way.

I think with 6 Fighter levels, you'll never really be a slouch along the way.

My plan would Eldritch Knight 7, Wizard 13. That gets 7th level spells and the ability to use a cantrip and a weapon attack in the same turn. Of course, I prefer a more gestalt style multiclassing, so I'm waiting for that to show up in the UA articles.

I just looked this up: the 6/14 and 7/13 splits get the same number of spells at 20th level. That 7th level EK ability is definitely worth it!

Assuming you are actually playing this, I think that levels 10-14 are going to be a challenge -- you will be way behind on spells and on attacks. You'll have a flexible range of cantrips available to you, but not as much flexibility as some other classes class combinations.

True, unless you'd prefer the 14th level wizard archetype feature.

Overchannel for Evokers is pretty nice, for instance.
