D&D 5E Light release schedule: More harm than good?

If you just got into RPG with 3e and PF its probably quite perplexing when WoTC doesn't appear to want to push out endless books of stuff.

But if fluff is what sells (I don't know either way), why would they want to do that? And that is the thing, they know what had sold, and what hasn't, which is at least some place to start planning future product.

I buy fluff. I want lots of it. Imagination can involve creation, but even reading a novel depends on imagination. I like to play in a well developed and shared playground.

For crunch, I'm most interested in books focused on a style of campaign. Thus, for a war campaign, it becomes easy to say, "you can use the Players' Handbook and Heroes of Battle."

That said, I would love a book or three about the standard races.

Well, I am mainly interested in fluff with light supporting crunch. Our opinions don't matter so much as what sells overall, which is something WOTC knows and we do not.

Because ideas beget ideas. People read fluff and get inspired to make their own fluff. Or they shamelessly steal fluff, reskin it and use it in their own campaigns.

And not everyone has the time, energy, ability, and/or desire to create things from whole cloth. Just like some people may want to build a house from scratch, while others may be happy just picking out the colors and furnishing in order to call it their own.

If you want to say it's a game of imagination then you technically don't need rules either, you just use your imagination and make stuff up. Would save a lot of money to be honest, but that's not the way it works.

Fluff has always sold and sold well. The great thing about established fluff is the fact that it benefits "everyone". Don't want to use it, then don't? Want to modify it, then change what you want? Want to use every bit of it, then you are welcome to it? With that you please everyone.

Just because I want fluff doesn't mean my imagination is lacking. Sometimes I want to play in someone's imagination besides my own. Do you play in other people's games? Well if you do then it's the same thing. You are playing in their imagination. Campaign settings such as Forgotten Realms and Eberron give people a place to visit, it's a conglomeration of other people's imaginations that you can go and play in and at the same time, add your own bits to it.

I wouldn't pay D&D a cent for just rules.
