D&D 5E Can someone please explain to me why there are still no PDFs for 5e core books?

Technically you may be right, just as technically it was illegal to record an album you owned on vinyl to cassette so you you could listen to it in the car back in the day.
Obviously the person with the vinyl should be playing that in the car and not using some evil, illegal, piracy embracing cassette tape.

What? Speed bump? Noooooooooo!!!!

I think the best reason not to seek out a digital copy of a 5E book you purchased has nothing to do with the (im)morality of piracy or the sanctity of IP law (and as a content creator I believe in protecting IP). The biggest reason not to find a PDF is that it actually allows WotC to ignore the demand for them and not finally produce high quality digital versions of their books. If everyone who wants a PDF goes and fills that need with a "free" version, there is no pressure on WotC from the customer base. And what i want is for WotC to realize that the digital space is just as important to tabletop gaming as the physical space is. As the OP says -- it's 2015. Figure it out.

As an aside, I am not sure about the idea that there are no PDFs because of pressure from brick and mortar stores. What percentage of books from through b&m retailers versus Amazon?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not advocating anyone obtaining a PDF **of something they don't legally own**. That is the difference. You choose to use a narrower definition, and that's fine. Unfortunately, the laws were written long before there was even such a thing as digital distribution, and they're in dire need to revamping.

It doesn't matter if that person owns the material they're getting a PDF of from another source. That source has no legal right to distribute the PDFs they made. Period. That's the point of copyright - the right to produce and distribute the intellectual property is held exclusively by the copyright holder so that they can benefit from the work they invested in it. All other duplication and distribution is illegal unless specifically done by agreement with that copyright holder with very limited exceptions. And getting the whole work from someone else who does not have an arrangement to do so from the copyright holder, even if you own a copy in one format and this supplier is giving you another format, is not one of them.

Obviously the person with the vinyl should be playing that in the car and not using some evil, illegal, piracy embracing cassette tape.

wait... are those the only options... wait no there are others... like wait till you get home, or buy a cassette legally...

The fact that you have to say this boggles my mind... the fact that people try to sya "just pirate it" in other words also does....

when did it become so socially expectable to openly discus breaking the law?
when did it become ok to just take something if you want it?

When we stopped living in a Lawful Evil society I guess.
