D&D 5E Princes of the Apocalypse and the Forgotten Realms

Cadriel

First Post
I have Princes of the Apocalypse and I'm really, really happy with the book. I'm so enthused with the way that the module uses factions and the Realms setting (and with its adventure design)that I'm going to start running it next week, with fresh characters in Red Larch, playing through "trouble in Red Larch."

Now, it brings up the question of the Realms. I actually have a pretty good Forgotten Realms collection, but it's heavily focused on the early material. I have the 1e boxed set, most of the setting-focused FR series books, and some but not as much of the 2e line, including the boxed set, Forgotten Realms Adventures, and Faiths & Avatars. But I don't have any of the 3e or 4e books for FR.

Would any of them add anything to the current Realms for running this campaign? Is F&A still a good overview of the religions as of the time in PotA, or is there a better source? If the players go off-map, I have FR1 Waterdeep and the North and FR5 The Savage Frontier; is there anything else I should know about those areas to run them effectively?

(BTW, knowing this was set in the Savage Frontier , which was developed by Jennell Jaquays, really helped get me stoked about the module.)

You should not have any problem at all setting it in the 1e or 2e era. I don't have the module myself yet, but I'm setting in the 3e era and I don't expect any complications. Hell, the book is jammed packed with ways to adapt it to completely different campaign settings.

I think you could easily use Waterdeep or the Savage Frontier supplements and do just fine.

I would add 2E's Volo's Guide to the North to the list of books that might be helpful. There was nothing from 3.xE I thought worthwhile but 4E's Neverwinter Campaign Setting might be useful for the lands nearby, although it doesn't impact the specific geographic area of Princes.

In short, Volo's. (A lot of the information from Volo's Guide to the North was repeated in The North boxed set. That's another option.)

Really? I thought you were quite fond of Silver Marches, Unapproachable East and Secrets of the Moonsea?

Oops, sorry, but my reply was unclear.

I was specifically addressing 3.xE products relating to that area where Princes of the Apocalypse is set where there really is nothing.

But 3.xE in general? There are so many great products: Silver Marches, Unapproachable East, Shining South, Underdark, and Lost Empires of Faerûn are (probably) my favourites.
