D&D 5E Casting more than one spell in a turn/round

I was told by a player in my local game yesterday that you cannot cast more than one spell in a turn/round even if you have spells that can be cast on a Bonus action. So you could not use your main action to cast a spell then your Bonus action to cast a spell that can be cast on a Bonus action. Is this correct?

Almost. If you cast a spell that takes a bonus action to cast, you may only cast a cantrip in addition. PHB page 202.

Cheers!

Shield Spell is a "Reaction" Spell that can be cast out of your turn and some cantrips are bonus action spells as well as some higher level spells but I see these Higher level spells require a Weapon Attack "Action" first
or are Healing Word spells

Your "Turn" is casting a "Bonus Action Spell" and a Cantrip "Action"

but what you are asking is "Can you cast a "Bonus Action" Spell as a "Action"", why would you waste the "Action" when you can use the extra "bonus action", and per the book, no you can not cast the "bonus Action" as an "Action", but asked the DM, DM might allow it

Book: You must use a bonus action on you turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven't already taken a bonus action.

if the spell has "Bonus Action" and "Action" in the spell description, some Action spells can be cast as rituals, but is written that way, I did not see a "Bonus Action" spell listed as a "Action" to.

Our Group was doing this "Cure Wounds Spell" "Action" and "Healing Word" "Bonus Action", but we did it wrong

A follow-up question:

Is there any way to cast more than one regular (as in not restricted: non-cantrip, non-reaction) spell in a round?

Say, two Fireballs?

(I'm pretty sure the answer right now is "no", but it doesn't hurt to get a clear answer to what I assume the OP is really fishing for.)

Action surge...

Action surge...

Don't think so. The exact limitation is under spells cast with a bonus action (you cannot cast another spell on the same turn unless it is a can trip with a casting time of one action.) I guess you could claim that this only applies to bonus action spells (healing word, spiritual weapon, etc), but my guess is that the intention is that only 1 non-cantrip spell can be cast per turn.

Action surge would allow you to cast a fireball and then a cantrip, or cast a fireball and then make a weapon attack.

Limitation is same turn, not same round, so you could use a reaction on somebody else's turn to cast shield regardless.

Cantrips are still very powerful, so bonus spell plus cantrip is still a turn well spent!

Word of God, or at least Jeremy Crawford, is that you can use Action Surge to get two leveled spells off in the same round. Source.

Is this viable/legal:

* Someone attacks you. As reaction, you cast Shield.
* Your initiative comes up.
* You cast Healing Word as a bonus action. (Alternate version: you cast Magic Missile as a bonus action, using the Quickened metamagic.)
* Your main Action can be "Cast a Spell", but now that only can be used to cast a cantrip. You cast Shocking Grasp on your immediately-adjacent foe.
* You move away from your foe, up to your base Speed. Your foe cannot take an Attack of Opportunity, because the Shocking Grasp prevents them from taking Reaction.
* You then take an Action Surge. Your extra Action is "Cast a Spell", and on THAT action, you can cast any spell. Now that you're out of your foe's melee reach, how about Scorching Ray? (Variant: Empowered!)
