D&D 5E So, 5e OGL

I'm sure there are very loyal fans that would throw money at Pathfinder/Paizo no matter what it did. There are D&D/WotC fans who would do the same. But is it enough?

In general, no it wouldn't be enough - Paizo need to produce quality product to make sales.

In the specific case where WotC have found a way to kill the OGL specifically to hamstring Paizo? In that case, yes, I think the cult of Paizo would be sufficiently outraged to make it a success - even if PF 2.0 was nothing more than a rebadged F.A.T.A.L.

At this point do we really think WotC cares about Pathfinder using the 3E engine anymore? Enough to make them want to spend the time and money just to try and kill the OGL? D&D is now two editions out from the 3E/d20 OGL engine... at this point you could almost make the case that Pathfinder is its own game separate from D&D at this point anyway-- and if WotC's fine with all the other fantasy RPGs that have their toes dipped in D&D tropes (Savage Worlds, 13th Age, all the OSR games etc.)... why would they care enough to treat PF and Paizo any different? (Other than just "bruised egos" from 4E... but for the most part almost everyone involved with the decision-making and creation of 4E is no longer with the company anyway).

I'd almost think right now those still in the D&D department of WotC probably look upon PF as just like Vampire, M&M, FATE and the rest-- other RPGs out there that aren't D&D that people could choose to play ("D&D" now being specifically the 5th edition version). So their job isn't to try and make those other games fail... it's to make their own 5E game succeed. And if those other games also succeed... then so be it.

If WotC really did that, Pathheads, would receive support from other RPG fans and 3PPs. That strategy would be terrible PR for WotC.

well in my day dream future the OGL would be destroyed, and all the pathheads would have to either play an orginal game or play an older one... and no company could ever make money off of someone else work... I know it wont ever happen, but I can dream.

It's possible that they intend to release the mechanics under the OGL, but are still working on some form of brand license that will release alongside it, which would take longer and be more restrictive, but give rights to use things like the stat block format and a version of the D&D logo.

Given the original logic of the OGL, and that there are plenty of reports of people playing PF APs in 5E, and the brand focus of WOTC...think they are plenty satisfied for Paizo to continue supporting D&D.

Think you might be right on that front.

Wow. "You like something, so I'll take it away from you." You must be a joy at parties...

Do you bring craft beer at parties? Cause that goes a long way.

-Pathfinder sucks and all its books should burn!

-Oy.

-I also brought a Belgian style barley wine aged in whiskey casks!

-Oh, you.
