D&D 5E Forgotten Realms 5th Edition - Which Campaign Setting?

The irony is... you seem to be making your statement as though WotC has messed up, and that they should feel like this is something they have to fix. However, I truly believe WotC is HAPPY that you are choosing to play in the 3E Forgotten Realms, and that your decision isn't a "punishment" of WotC at all. It doesn't matter to them which Forgotten Realms era you are playing the game in... because all that's really important is that you *are* playing the game. Especially considering you can buy a crapton of 3E products that they're selling at dndclassics.com if you feel like you needed more. So why would they feel bad that you made that decision?

That's the entire point of their design goals for 5E in the first place. That you aren't beholden to WotC's product releases, but rather you can use every single product you already have on your shelves.

So while I think my previous statement was misunderstood (I don't think WotC even knows I exist, much less that they put any value in my opinion of their products) you are absolutely correct in believing that I'm happy with the 3e FR setting. One of the purposes of this thread was to get some feedback from other groups/players regarding their preferences for which setting is the "right one".

To be able to use my existing FR setting is a bonus from my perspective (yay! I don't have to spend more money for stuff!) and not in any way would I consider it a punishment to WotC (again, I'm confident that they don't even know my group exists).

Of course. I said 'you' mainly as the representative of the group of players who are thinking along the same lines as you, the group of players WotC is thinking about. Obviously yeah, they don't know you (or I) from a hole in the ground... but as a member of the group of people who are looking for a large and more detailed tableau in which to set their 5E game, I really don't think WotC cares one whit what you (the group) ultimately decide. Whether that's cobbling together a pseudo-canon Realms from 5E sources, or using the 3E FRCS, or the Grey Box, or even going outside WotC altogether and using something like Golarion or Kingdoms of Kalamar... all that really matters is that you are enjoying your RPG experience and hopefully enjoying your 5E game. Because that will inspire other people to get into RPGs and 5E D&D, which will inspire them to buy the books, and then their inspiration might inspire other people again, and so on.

People getting together around the table to play a game is the end goal because it helps everyone in the RPG community... regardless of the game, system, or setting that is being played.

Sadly, the novels are the only official source that I'm aware of, and they clarify very little about the Sundering, offering only a narrow perspective of a much larger event. The other offical source would be Ed Greenwood himself, you can ask him here, but you may run into a NDA as well as finding your answer (the fate of Halruaa and the gods Eilistraee and Vhaeraun after the Sundering, for example, have already been clarified).

Where were these answered? those are actually something I've been wanting specifically to know about.
