He also said it won't be what people think. Do it might be unlike the GSL or OGL. I wonder if it will be a paid licence, where you buy a licence to produce content from WotC.

Mike did mention it on his Tome Show interview. My summary is here (check towards the bottom)...

Cheers!

* The 3rd party license: The plans are big and complex. Mike is excited about it, but it's not ready yet. It's probably not what people are thinking of. One of the things they really wanted was for people to be very familiar with the rules before doing more material. (If someone tries to sell you something that ignores the concentration rule, they haven't played the game enough to be familiar with what the rule does, as its a very important balancing tool.)

Thanks, MerricB! I figured they'd have to address it in some manner with Gen Con going. It's not a flat out "No" and it implies something more akin tot he GSL than the OGL, so I think this spells the end for any OGL possibilities for 5E. That's very sad, IMO.

I guess this is the big news though -

There's no reason to think that would change for an OGL, which the fans are unlikely to be interested in.
This keeps being said, and I'm not sure I agree. I enjoy making characters almost as much as I enjoy playing them, and I'm very interested in there being an OGL for this reason. I may not care about the particulars of the prospective 5E OGL at the same level as a publisher would, but I really would like there to be one. I guess I'm one of the few that actually likes the glut of character options.

But you don't need the OGL to do that. If you enjoy making all types of characters you don't need to buy character options... we have an entire board here on EN World full of Homebrewed character material to use for free. Try out any of that stuff if you want. Other types of Sorcerers, all other manner of spells and races, new animal forms, so on and so forth. A 5E SRD is not required to get what you want at all.

A third-party license that is unlike OGL or GSL?

Fortunately, there is always OGL.

If only people really felt as though that was the solution. We wouldn't keep having thread after thread of people talking about wanting 5E to be made Open in the first place. ;)

Need? Perhaps not, but all of that stuff exists in a legal gray area, and WotC can lay the smack down if they so desire. It's also probably easier to convince your DM to allow use of third party stuff if it's published by a reputable company than "some guy on ENWorld".
