D&D 5E How to Break 5E

I kind of unbanned them because no one picks them anyway. They do not really turn up on the various char op posts anyway.

I usually ban stuff based on theme or the setting so no Dragonborn, Drow, Tieflings and Aasimar on Mystara for example, on Greyhawk and Krynn Paladins would be LG only.

Steel Brightblade isnt a fantastic example of an evil Paladin?

Hiya.

My houserule...

Long Rests: "Houserule: After a long rest, a character can not take another long rest until he/she has been awake and active for a number of hours equal to their Constitution score. Extreme physical activity can reduce that in half".

So, a character with a 12 Con has to be up/awake for 12 hours of "normal activity" before they can get a good, solid, 'long rest' (re: sleep). If, as is likely the case for adventurers, they are in high-stress situations, fighting, casting spells, climbing cliffs, punching sharks in the nose as they tread water in raging seas, etc... then it would be 6 hours.

Yeah, this makes having a high Con a little bit of a detriment, but hey, who said life was fair? ;)

There is already a rule that you can't take more than one long rest in 24 hours, so probably unnecessary.

Hiya!

Well, yes, but when does that 24 hours "start and end"? Could someone take a Long rest from 4 pm to 12 am, then another from 12 am to 8 am? Does the 24 hour start at the start of a Long Rest, or at the end of one? That's why I have my method. It makes for more variability and predictability of when someone can take a Long Rest. Well, for my game anyway. :)

I'm the DM and it's very rare my group have had more than 1-3 encounters per day. They almost never take short rests.

This is because we like our fights exciting. To be any challenge, a fight must be difficult. After one or three such fights, a PC is depleted, more or less.

I consider the 6-8 encounter expectation fundamentally flawed. Who in their right mind want to fight three goblins, and then another three goblins, and so on, just to see if you can do it without spending any significant resources?

I don't know about you, but playing according to the 6-8 expectation would bore us to death...

Maybe. Then again you have never encountered my 3 goblins of Doom :)
