D&D 5E Are there 5E stats for the Hoopak?

Hi guys,

First of all, forgive me if this has been asked before, I could not find it anywhere.

My question is simple: are there any 5E official stats for the kender hoopak? One of the players in my new campaign is gonna play a halfling rogue and would like to use a hoopak, but I could not find stats for this weapon.

Thanks in advance,
Guilberwood

As far as I know, the description of a hoopak is, 'a strangely-shaped piece of wood clutched in the death grasp of a justifiably murdered thieving bastard!'

...or something like that...

...I've just come from the 'Kender' thread...

There is no official stats so lets make one using the Players' Handbook. If you are not aware how a hoopak looks ...google it. You will see from the picture that it has a sling on one end and a spear on the other. So use sling and spear stats depending on how your player uses the weapon.

I'd use the stats for a quarter staff, but give it the option to hurl stones instead of the versatile property.

Don't have it on hand, but you might want to check the 5e playtest that included the kender, IIRC it also gave stats for the hoopak.

This is a good start. Make it two hands and limit the damage to d6 (bludgeoning!). They're not much longer/taller than the kender, not exactly a full "staff." OR, if you like the versatile flavor, d4(d6 with two hands).

Optionally, the wielder can use it to sling (d4? What's a sling in 5e?) with a standard sling range. This requires two hands (another reason to just universally make the weapon two handed instead of versatile).

And the whirlly bird noisemaker thing is your attack action, forces a DC8 Wis. save or breaks concentration and, for creatures that do not know the hoopak wielder, imposes the frightened condition until the noise stops or the beginning of your next turn, whichever comes first. This is dependent on hearing instead of line of sight and the save is automatic/not required if you see the kender making the noise! This also requires two hands...so, really, unless you're just looking to complicate things (reeeally like the versatile thing), make it a flat d6 bludgeoning damage for the haft and require two hands for any of its uses.

Obviously, it requires a member of the Kender race <shudder. ugh.> to properly/fully use. Non-kender can use it as a club, obviously, can attempt to sling with it at a -4 penalty to hit, and can not get it to make the noise at all.

Not getting a proficiency bonus might be penalty enough (it is, after all, just a staff and a sling). Although merchants and people with valuables might look unkindly at a non-kender wielding it, and thereby suffer Disadvantage on Diplomacy checks. Seriously, what sort of loser uses a no-good thieving bastards joke of a weapon anyway?

A staff sling has considerably more power than a hand sling. (In part, because it can be used two handed, and in part, because of the effects of two levers instead of one.) A hand sling can put a golf ball into a sheet of 3/8" plywood, from 50 yards. A staff sling can put it through the plywood from 70yd...

And the staff sling is easier to learn.

The Hoopak is, in all ways, a staff sling with a spearpoint as a butt-cap.

Additionally, it could be used (as any good melee spear can) as a quarterstaff.

There are no stats unless you are talking older edition in obscure books.

I am thinking a weapon like that would be a 1d6 ranged and 1d6 melee house ruled in.
