Has a "companion" supplement for Out of the Abyss been announced? There are a lot of monsters that doesn't appear in the Basic Rules, and aren't in the module either (since they are in the MM).

No. But they didn't announce the Princes of the Apocalypse one either.
I expect they'll release one, either this week or the next, closer to the general release date.

Well, they released the Princes of the Apocalypse Adventure Supplement on April 8th according to the date on the document, while the book was released on the 7th, which was the regular street date and not the premier store early release date.
Although, I seem to recall the PDF being a little later than the supposed date.

There were 2 supplements for the previous story line:

- Adventure Supplement (~55pages) > PHB/MM/DMG stuff that is not in Basic
- Player's Companion (~25pages) > entirely new character stuff (races & spells) that's neither in Basic nor in the PHB

Clearly the purpose of the first is to let people who have only Basic (or are missing some books from the core 3) to have everything they need to buy and play the adventures. This was a very good move from WotC and consistent with the idea that people could buy any one book (including adventures) and be able to play the game without more purchases. A similar document was released for the ToD storyline the year before. It makes sense to do the same for the RoD adventures, even if it means that it will overlap in content with the previous.

The purpose of the second is to introduce new character material. Honestly I was surprised they did that, because I thought this kind of material is kind of "premium" and comes with the printed book only. But obviously it was nice by WotC to make it available to all :) There was no equivalent of this for the ToD storyline, most probably because the whole 5e had been just released so all character material was new, and there was no need to add more already at this stage.

Nothing new about that ?

No more spells, magic items and/or monsters are needed in the Basic Rules to play out of the Abyss ?

There's the core rulebooks, but no other unique options. This is why I like PotA better, so many awesome new options.

I have to find the source again , and I could be remembering wrong, so take this with a grain of salt, but I feel like I saw a quote from mearls (maybe in that compiled Twitter thread?) where someone asked him about oota supplement and he said one is planned but somehow got bumped from the schedule and would look in to it...

Or something. Again I could be remembering wrong

Thanks for that tweet!

Mostly what you need is monsters from the Monster Manual.

Of course you might say "but I know all those monsters already". The benefit is that we're slowly building up an electronic MM, one where you can print out pictures and copy statblocks for your players to see :)
