D&D 5E Do you think we will get an Oriental Adventures setting for 5th edition?

How is the term "dark age" offensive? What are you on about?

It originates in a period of propaganda, designed to denigrate one culture (Medieval Europe) in order to fluff up another (the so-called "Enlightenment").

The term is simply not used by historians or social scientists anymore; the "Dark Ages" were a time of political decentralization and a dearth of written culture in some area for a limited time, but saw a general improvement of less sexy tech (mills, bridges, roads agriculture, etc).

Oriental at least has the benefit of referring an area that is the Easter part of a landmass, but similarly involves over-simplifying and denigrating a foreign culture.

The earlier comparison to "Out of the Abyss" is silly. WotC doesn't have to worry about offending demons because demons aren't real. They may offend fringe groups like some extreme religious people, but that is unavoidable. The fringe groups are going to be offended at something no matter what. But the difference is that "Out of the Abyss" doesn't use terms that categorize actual people based on how or where they were born. That should be obvious.

Yes, it is so silly that an entire edition of DnD removed the term so as to not offend a "fringe" group.

So if a fringe religious group can suck up the term Demon being used in a roleplaying book then a fringe ethnic group can also suck up the term Oriental being used in a roleplaying book.

As my Oriental friend said last night, the people that actually play the game just will not care.

I think Kara-Tur will rear its ugly head again... I would prefer Wizards to cut a deal with FFG and continue with the D&D OA Rokugan, but that's because I love the L5R setting.

And yes, I do know that AEG does L5R - and that L5R is being purchased by FFG... so at this point it would be "cut the deal with the new owners"

While I chide Kara-Tur for taking the rather lazy approach of filing off the real-world names and such and and replacing them with new names (or, in some cases, using historical names—Wa and Koryo, I'm looking at you), I cared for Rokugan less as it just seemed homogeneous and , at times, too gimmicky).

I'm about to find this whole thread offensive if the tone does not markedly improve in the next few posts. Be decent to each other, as befits the respect entitled to other human beings.

So cut the deal, and call it Legend of the 5 Rings. or call it the Rokugan setting. This is the biggest hurdle?

Problem is that that's easier said than done. FFG have just picked up Lot5R (and Rokugan), and they'll be wanting to use it for their own games. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see three RPGs from them covering the setting, and using their in-house system. But I would be surprised to see them license it out to WotC for a game... not least because I'm not sure WotC would even be interested in spending the money for a fairly niche product.

So FFG can write a setting book instead of their own game(s) . They'll like the deal if they're paid to like it. If not, well WotC can still make a setting book, and call it 'Something so we don't get sued'. It would be easy enough I think and judging by the number of people discussing it here, there's interest enough to make the publisher some money. Samurai could be a fighter specialty, Wu Jen for the Sorcerer and so forth. Hengyoki, Vanara, and Shinomen ought to be easy, throw in new demons (Oni) and a mechanic for the Taint.
