No, why do you say that?

The fact Mmearls confessed they had forgotten to me means any time-line is not applicable in trying to guess the publication date.

Why? Because they're late! Being late pretty much is the definition of "missing our usual deadlines"...

It would be much constructive if you were to ask on Twitter how far along the basic guide is coming :)

(I'm not on Twitter myself)

Still nothing?

You might have a point, Jester...

WotC has a very short term memory.
Unless something is an immediate goal or is part of a future goal, it is forgotten. Once they blow a deadline and let something slide, chances are it's never going to be updated.

This is just a general observation of the company going back years. There were contests that just vanished, promised product Web Enhancements that never appeared, DDI companion articles, revisions of playtests, and more. Most recently there's the update for the 5e DM Basic rules bringing that content in line with the DMG, and the aforementioned conversion guides.

Was there ever a resolution to this?

If not an update, maybe a message confirming that earlier promises wouldn't be kept?

(Not asking about conversion guides. It was clear from the start 5E was sufficiently different from earlier editions that would just not be helpful.)

I don't think so. My impression is that the idea that you could play any new adventure with just the basic rules (plus some ad-hoc web enhancement) was just quietly dropped.

Well, I wouldn't say dropped as much as "never the plan in the first place".

Obviously WotC want a situation where you feel you need to pay for their products to play their content.

The cheapskate option was probably intended as a plan B if 5E didn't do well. Since it very early became clear it was a success, there's just no reason to continue supporting the "free tier" - WotC clearly understand they don't need those players (or, more likely, can wait until peer pressure forces them to open their wallets)
