Looking For a System (and I have a forum question)

Max_Killjoy

First Post
I'm looking for a system to run a fantasy-genre game. The setting will be my own, with low-to-middle magic.

(Might as well jump right in, right? These forums were recommend to me by someone on another site where the question would have been off-topic.)

Mechanics wishlist:
No classes -- character builds are open.
No levels -- progression is by XP expenditure.
Characteristics and skills both matter.
Dice results are "curved" resulting in somewhat more predictable results.
Resolution is relatively quick, without a massive amount of mathematics or debate before or after a roll, and without needing to look up a dozen of special "talents" and whanot
Can handle magic without magic overwhelming other ways of doing things.
Prefer resource-based rather than slot-based magic.
Combat is smooth, but not highly abstract -- mechanical actions model character actions, not some undefined unit of abstract stuff.
Game scales well -- avoids the issues some games have of the attack/defense/damage/soak relationships radically changing as characters advance.

Maybe that's a tall order -- certainly doesn't match anything I know of, other than trying to build it myself starting with HERO or something.

As for my general forum question -- is there a place to post general worldbuilding / setting questions?

Thanks.

On the other question -- if I had a world-building question on some setting details, would a thread for that be OK in the general forum here? And what's the risk of anything too specific being purloined?

You can just put it in the general forum, yeah. There isn't a specific forum for world-building.

Purloined? I don't really know how to answer that question. :)

You could take a look at Burning Wheel, which features most of these properties. Advancement isn't via XP, it's more detailed than that, but BW hits all the others.

Long ago, I used to run some stuff at gaming cons... I've seen ideas from those games, with the serial numbers filed off, show up in published products (connected to people who were at those same cons). It's made me a bit paranoid that if I were ever to find myself in a position to publish something using those ideas, I'd be the one on the losing end of any dispute.

With all due respect, ideas are ten a penny. Ideas aren't valuable; it's what you do with them that makes them valuable. Anybody on this forum can come up with 10 ideas off the top of their head without any notice.

How many catlike aliens are there? Or ray guns? Or orc variations? Or abandoned haunted space stations? Most ideas are pretty derivative anyway.

But if you honestly believe you have a unique, non derivative idea that has value in itself, and you are worried somebody might use it, best not post it online. I personally think you're worrying too much, but only you can decide your level of comfort.

It was a bit more specific than "cat aliens". But, you could well be correct.
