Half X/Half Y races

I like the faerie dragon idea, but I think the breath weapon is too strong as is.

The Human/halfling abilites both seem too strong for subrace powers. And "Half-hin" is a copout. Gotta go with "Half-halfling" or "Quarterling" ;)

It was probably because I was actively trying to not make the sub races too weak. I wasn't sure about the Lucky trait, but it seemed like the main thing for Halflings, so I included it.

Could you say what seems wrong with the Half-Human subrace? I think it fits well enough, considering it is the only thing they get, no fun bonuses like the other races.

On the Faerie Dragon, yeah, I am not sure how to handle it. I could remove the breath weapon entirely, and just give it Telepathy instead, or give it Magic resistance, but Telepathy seems more like a ribbon ability, and Magic resistance seems even stronger than the breath. Alternatively, I could make the breath only recharge on a long rest.

Well a big issue is you could put it in Dex and get +4 dex total. If you fix that it is still pretty strong though. I'd restrict it to +1 to two stats that aren't Dex, though maybe that is too conservative.

Other than something short & ugly, what do you envision a Halfling/half-orc pairing would produce?

Because the session that kicked off my All Barbarian game was the 1/2orcs being summoned (via a Horn of Vallhalla) into a wild party full of well, sex drugs & rock&roll IS the best description, hosted by a bunch of satyrs.
Dice were rolled, cards were drawn, & one of the 1/2orcs ended up with the Halfling serving girl behind the bar....

I think that it makes sense, since it is a half human. They are so varied, I wouldn't rule out such a boost. Besides, in the end it is just a +2 to Dex checks. No darkvision, no racial cantrips, nothing special except for the stats.

That aside, do you think 1 stat point would work better?

Halfling/ half orc. Interesting combination. Using the basic framework I have, the stats would depend on the primary source. Have not yet gotten into Dominant genes and might not. Much funner to let the players pick.

Half-orc/Halfling
Half-orc subrace: Half-Hin
+1 dex (replaces your +1 constitution), choose lucky or brave

Halfling subrace: Quarter-orc, Quarter-Human (AKA Half-half-orc)
+1 Strength, choose Menacing or Relentless endurance

Maybe it is a bit lazy to make them so basic, what do you think? Of course, if I (and anyone who wants to use them, feel free) treat these as a basic framework, and stacks on whatever they feel works, I am sure they will come out plenty fleshy, mechanics wise.

One issue might be that there are some choices that are obviously better from a mechanics perspective, and I am not sure how to balance that kind of thing off. My players are not power-gamey enough to see these options and choose one for pure mechanical benefit, so I have no experience in the area.

Maybe I don't understand what you're meaning. The way you described it, a halfling, half-human subrace could get
+4 Dex
Lucky
Brave
Halfling Nimbleness

Lucky is one of the best racials, but not as good as +4 Dex. And Brave is solid too. It is hard to see how any other race would be in the same league for a Dex-based character concept.

I get where you're going - stat & characteristic wise it is just easier, but a gnome + halfling = human ??? That doesn't feel quite right.

Yeah, it would get a bit weird with two S humanoids, but at this time the halflings and gnomes do not interact.
