D&D 5E I think the era of 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons had it right. (not talking about the rules).

Folks in these parts underestimate the movie effect: it will probably be a literal game hanger, no matter what level of quality or hit ot ends up being.

We have been there before, 3.0s success had very little to do with the movie which was bad anyway.

Just because they make a D&D doesn't really mean squat there is no guarantee it will be like a Superhero or Star Wars movie.

For product release it foes, when the industry you leader is working with one of the biggest film studios in the world. It can be a critical and commercial disappointment, like Suicide Squad, and still seriously affect the hobby.

The old movie did not have WotC involvement, or Hasbro buy-in, let alone studio backing. People wanting more D&D products now...might find that there is a flood latter.

off topic but Suicide Squad was a commercial disappointment?

Nah. The movie might do something for the D&D brand. Other than the inevitable storyline book tie-in, it won't have any real effect on the game.

(Just in case it isn't obvious: yes, that's just my prediction.)

Hey, all we got is speculation at this point! So, we will get tons of merchandising guaranteed, by Hasbro: toys, cartoons, etc. If a movie makes $300 Million at the box office (not unreasonable given Warner Bros track record), that means 33 million tickets sold, give or take. If one in a thousand viewers sees an ad for Fantasy Grounds before the movie (not unlikely) and decides to check ot out on Steam, that would mean 30,000 new or returning gamers.

The potential impact on the hobby is absolutely minor, but relatively huge.

Depending on how the Volo's Monster Guide turns out, it's a step in the right direction because its something different and something I want to use.

Over time new player's will become advanced players and they will want more content so it is inevitable.

Well, apart from the ones who check it out and immediately walk away again.

But the biggest surprise from this post: Fantasy Grounds do cinema ads?
