D&D 5E Holiday Challenge: Vow of the Silent Knight

I'll post the YouTube link when they have it up. It was pretty harrowing in terms of challenge and entertaining to watch.
I don't really have the time or the inclination to watch other people playing games. Any chance you could summarize the highlights? Not that it really matters, since I won't be running this after all ... :(

I lack the time this year to put out a new holiday-themed challenge, so I'm giving this a little bump in case you need something for your holiday sessions. Happy Holidays everyone!

What games are you playing this holiday season?

Thanks for bumping this. It's a really creative idea and if my group gets together at all this month I know I'll be down a player or two, so this could make the perfect one-off while I put CoS on hold until our January session.

I saw someone else had mentioned a troll at a bridge to emphasize the "over the river and through the woods" part of the adventure. I'm stealing that too, only I'll have to make mine a touch demonic, give him a sack & some birch branches and call him Krampus. :p

Either way if the session ever comes to pass I'll let you know how it goes. It's a busy time of the years for everyone and with so much up in the air who knows if it'll even happen. Still, this is going in the vault for later use if it doesn't get used this year.

Thanks for the feedback and I hope you get a chance to use it!

So I watched it, and I thought it was quite delightful! Let's see, highlights...

  • The DM went all out with the customization, reworking all the spells to holiday themes. They had things like giant snowball, candy cane storm, and healing ho-ho-ho. The in-game holiday was "Giftsmas," the feast of St. Giftalus.
  • Players also had to recite the verbal components for their spells. One PC cast light on a red glass globe and attached it to a reindeer's nose. The verbal component was "Rudolph, with your nose so bright, won't you guide my sleigh tonight?" It wasn't clear whether the verbal components were preset or improvised on the spot.
  • Noëlle's charades went over very well.
  • They did not use the little drummer sprite, and Noëlle was a celestial (adopted daughter of one of the PCs). Also, Tannenbaum was renamed to Hermie for no apparent reason.
  • The quest began in the town of Bedleham, famous for its holiday hams. The hams were supposed to be exported, but they were in danger of going bad because the roads were blocked by the dryads' activity. I believe the treant was supposed to be the guardian of the road.
  • There was an added encounter with "snowbolds" (small snow elementals) on the way through the woods. Their main attack is to peck with their carrot noses. When killed, they turn into blobs of snow for one round, but they will re-form on the next round unless their hats are removed, either before killing them or while they are in the blob phase.
  • There was also an icy river hazard.
  • The dryads didn't use shortbows, but instead grabbed fallen branches and cast shillelagh.
  • The race to get Noëlle to the top of the tree was quite a nail-biter!
  • One PC was caught prone in the path of an animated tree! He was saved by another PC quickly casting enlarge before the tree could attack.
  • Dice rolls were pretty crazy. One roll was double nat-20s, and another was a nat-20 and a nat-1!
Well worth checking out for those who enjoy these things. Everybody was in a good mood and seemed to be having a ton of fun.

I ran this with my group at work on Monday night. It was a blast. They figured out the charades pretty well and because there were more players and they were higher level I added some red-eyed, red-nosed, fire breathing reindeer (giant elk base) as well as buffing the dryads and letting the treant attack every other round.

The players had a lot of fun and 2 new players joined in just for the night.

Highlights are the teifling warlock getting charmed but the two characters under the tree just digging through the presents for the good stuff.
One of the players disarmed another player and took their hammer to place under the tree.
The rogue helping the paladin go up the tree making sure she completed her quest.

The psychic damage inflicted after I thanked them for helping the silent knight.
