D&D 5E Light Spell on a stick and then breaking it into two limbs?

No. The tip of one or the tip of the other would have the spell on it.

I can see a more common use if allowed: chalk. If you allow it to still light up, you can have glowing marks all the length of the dungeon. Even better if each mark now gives off the full light radius. It is like drawing a torch on the wall wherever you want.

How would the above get resolved. If you cast light on a stick and then after it was cast you broke the stick into 2 pieces. Do both pieces light up now?

I'd have the player call one of their character's hands Heads and the other hand Tails, then flip a coin. The spell transferred to that stick.

But what if they actually did have a cheese grater? I mean I've put some odd stuff in my inventory for kicks before.

Let the player go ahead, but require them to change the spell's name to grater illumination.
