D&D 5E Mearls on other settings

I don't trust WOTC to do older settings like Greyhawk or The Known World or Dragonlance justice. There is too much pressure to squeeze things to fit their business/product/story model.

Move on,WOTC. Do something new and creative that the team can really get behind.

Outsource old stuff to Goodman (or others) like you are doing with B1 and B2.

I'll believe it when I see it.

At least if they open up DMsGuild to other settings I can hope for Bruce Heard to do The Known World proud.

I think I agree with you. I would love to see new settings, maybe even continue with the Points of Light one i hear so much about in this forums or Eberron. I like the realms but I need a break badly!!

Ι would love something like this, but I don't find it likely. They could do something like that with Al Qadim, but as we saw neither Jeff Grubb, neither Wolfgang Baur, or anyone else took the opportunity to make material for 5e.

Ed Greenwood is dipping his toes into the waters of the DM's Guild, though. I also understand that Keith Baker is prepared to do a bunch of Eberron stuff if they ever open that on DM's Guild.

Wolfgang Baur is, as I understand it, fairly busy with Kobold Press.

Wolfgang makes lots of 5E material through Kobold Press.

As for Al Qadim or other existing D&D settings... The terms of DM's Guild are friendly to newcomers with small projects. They're a lot less enticing to people who want to do larger, more comprehensive books, since they don't allow for crowdfunding and have some other terms that many pros--not all, but many--are leery of.

This is why I think the other settings are currently off-limits. I think they're going to do something like what I suggested up above and produce a 5e setting guide with short adventure and then open up the setting to the DMs guild.

As far as doing anything new I doubt it. Their business model seems firmly wedded to the FR sadly.

I would like them to do a proper setting book for the more interesting M:tG planes but I think the art books (and PDFs ) are as good as we're going to get.

Exactly this. This is the reason why i think dmsguild alone is not the solution for the other settings. It must be something more. I don't know what will be, but i think wizards will cover all the other setting with one "stroke" and supplementary will open the ip in dmsguild

I would love for them to bring back Dragon Lance and do the original Chronicles for 5e. That would be great! I know that they are hesitant but the 90's boxed sets and multiple worlds had a diversity and a richness that D&D really needs. The key to avoid splitting the fan base is to keep the world designers in line and not allow every new splat book to have powers and abilities that make previous stuff weak. That is what killed off 3E IMHO. New splat books had the new shiny power you just had to have. Do not create bloat, create richness & legitimate choices.

The setting could be done as one off campaign books with no follow up support/adventures/novels.

Best way to do this would be outsource it to 3pp using original authors where possible (Heard, Baker are keen?) and adventures can be put on the DMGuild.
