D&D 5E Looking for a generic dark gothic style setting. Not Ravenloft.

Maybe I'll ask the dumb question, but what's wrong with Ravenloft? Maybe if we understand your objection to Ravenloft we could better suggest an alternative.

Or you could just suggest an alternative if you know one. Do you really have so many other gothic horror campaign settings on the tip of your tongue that you don't have the time to type them all out? You need your vast array of gothic horror settings narrowed down for you first? You're a busy guy and can't spend a lot of time listing them all? ;)

I took his comment more in a "explain your thought process and you'll probably help yourself out as much or more as you help us help you." A lot of times when I make my students do this they arrive at their own conclusion, or I realize they're overthinking it. It's entirely possible the OP just needs to follow the KISS rule. Ravenloft, maybe with a few slight tweaks, seems like it could work just fine.

I'm not a fan of wasting my time by making suggestions that could be way off base because they don't solve the OP's objection, no.

Oh wait, I just replied to you. I guess I do waste my time occasionally!

Exactly. If we understand the objection we can make better suggestions. Just listing out 10 gothic campaign settings is stupid and a waste of time, without knowing what the OP is looking for.

Analogy time:
1: "Can you recommend a car?"
2: "Honda Civic."
1: "No, I need room for six."
2: "Honda Odyssey."
1: "No, I need ground clearance for dirt roads."
2: "Honda Pilot."
1: "No, my dad is a GM employee. I can get discounts on GM cars. No Honda."
2: //punches him in the face for not saying that in the first place//

Do you see how asking questions at the beginning would make this conversation more efficient?

This exactly what I was thinking too, that if we knew what the OP didn't like about Ravenloft we could just as easily suggest a way to "fix" that than suggest a whole new setting. Depending on how intrinsic to the setting the objection is.

Except that he wasn't asking for a 'Type of Car' and then saying no, no, no... he was asking for 'Different types of Honda Civics'. And thus there are only like less than a half-dozen minor different variations.

You would have to have a long list of Gothic Horror campaign settings in your back pocket to make the time it would take to list all those out for it to be less of a waste of time than the several posts you've already made. ;)

And therein lies the rub. You could of course just not assumed the OP was completely clueless and instead accepted that he already knew that he didn't want to use Ravenloft, even with "tweaks"... and thus just answered the question plainly. After all, don't you think if he wanted to tweak Ravenloft he would have just asked for that?

And tell you what... rather than you both responding to my post right here, why don't you save yourself the time by using your time instead to just answer the question Corpsetaker asked in the first place: What's a good generic gothic horror setting that isn't Ravenloft? Even if you have a long list of them, I'm pretty sure he'd appreciate even just one or two of them that haven't already been suggested. ;)

*snip* stuff *snip*

They won't have to respond to your post... I will. Who exactly appointed you thread police? Why is it you've taken so much interest in a couple of people asking the OP for some more information? The thread seemed to be cruising right along until you decided badger a couple of posters who had the temerity to... ask a question!?! The shock. The horror. Neither seemed to be antagonistic about it either, at least if they had been I'd get calling their motives into question. The OP is pretty sparse, asking for some further elucidation on what the OP might be specifically looking for seems pretty logical.

And before you try and spin this around on me, just know ahead of time: I'm not interested. I wasted my time on this post because I had the time to waste, but I'm not especially interested in following it up, what with not caring enough to and all. So I don't know, maybe let people ask questions and try to start a discussion on a message board without having to call them out on it for literally no reason.

I actually already answered upthread. And in my experience it's more expedient to assume idiocy and build up from there than to work at a high level and find out after a lot of wasted effort that you were working too high.

You must be a hell of a person to hang around with then. LOL.
