That extra cantrip is great for a wizard. And even if you do roll and mage to get an 18, the high elf will have a 19 intelligence and a 20 at level 4, they may not even use an ASI and instead pick up an intelligence half feat. The high elf makes a great wizard.

Flavorwise, the Elf must be a top-tier Bard and Wizard. It can be different cultures that fulfill these desiderata.

The Wood Elf culture already makes an excellent Ranger. The Ranger class needs improvement.

Your effort to make me satisfied with the High Elf mechanics has failed.

For any race.

If the race description claims to be known for something, then it better be. Put the mechanics where the mouth is.

*shrug* As I said, you have a very limited way of looking at things. +1 or +2 makes little difference - either is enough to be "known" for doing something, especially if the other racial abilities support it. Either way, your max is still a 20 attribute.

Cbwjm, if you are trying to make me like the High Elf mechanics, then your effort has failed.

I think the issue here is that others are not understanding why you are claiming that High Elf Wards are so sub-par.

They have no better stats than a human wizard after all. The human wizard only gets +1 Int. Possibly +2 if you take a half feat with variant human (if that's allowed in the game). But, again, you don't actually gain anything. You have a 17 Int, I have a 16. We both hit 20 at EXACTLY the same time. Presuming, of course, that 20 is the optimized goal, which I'm not entirely convinced that it is.

And let's not forget the suite of abilities that the elf gets - dark vision for a big one. Great, you're a human wizard. At night or underground, you are limited to a pretty darn short range (120 feet at the absolute best) and good luck on anything approaching stealth.

Yeah, I'm really not seeing the big difference between a +1 or +2 stat bump. Most of the time that +2 is wasted anyway.

To be clear, the High Elf makes a mediocre Wizard. Not a subpar Wizard like a Drow Elf does.

The point is, if the mechanics make a race merely mediocre at something, then the race fails to merit a description that claims it is characteristic.

Dont waste the ink if the blah-blah-blah is missing the mechanics to back it up.

And you think that a +2 Int instead of a +1 Int is the only difference between a "Mediocre" and a "Good" wizard. Gotcha.
