D&D 5E Poll for PC's with 4 or more levels in a class.

My current (or last PC with 4 or more levels) has 4 or more levels in:

Blue

Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal
If you go 4th why not 5th for the second attack?

My logic is that if I'm taking fighter as a dip to add to a weapon-wielding class, I'm probably planning on hitting 5th in that class. Getting extra attack twice doesn't add anything, so it would be a dead level.

On the other hand, if I do pick up Fighter 5, I'm probably not going 5+ in another weapon class (except maybe rogue), so it's no longer dipping - it's either a full blown "partner" class or it's my primary class.

Though that does suggest another way to phrase it - "check all the classes that are within 3 levels of your highest level class". These show the ones you are staying with. It's just not particularly accurate in the first 7-8 levels and I would say that if you added up all 5e games, more than 50% of all play time has been spend at levels 1-8.

I was thinking of running a gnome dual rapier wielding paladin just for lowkey13, but there's only so far I can go to troll an anonymous web user. Still, Sir Stabs-A-Lot could be a lot of fun. I even have a picture for him :D

I'm glad you still have that!

Man, when I showed my table that picture and said that's my gnome battlemaster, I discovered they were picturing him as grubby, big gnosed garden gnome with torn, filthy clothes.

That's one of my favorite photoshops! He has an honored place in my D&D/Images folder.

I will use him some day. Hmmm ... maybe it's time to convince my wife that for our next AL characters we need to do gnomes. :heh:

My PCs tend to be single classed since I play spellcasters and don't want to miss out on those high level spells. Of the multiclass characters in my groups that I have seen there was a half-orc pirate battlemaster who multiclassed into cleric for story reasons at level 5. I'm not sure what would have happened with that character after that as he was retired. Another that joined us played a fighter 2/rogue 3 swashbuckler which also just happens to be one of my favourite multiclasses.

When I next roll up a new character I'll be playing a dual wielding halfling fighter which will be singleclassed. I was tempted to play him in one of my current games but one game had no healer and the other had limited ranged support and no arcanist so I built PCs to provide support in those areas instead.

I'm curious why only your current or last PC? 5e has been out for a couple of years so shouldn't you be looking to see how many people have played straight fighters over that time period as opposed to just the current or last PC they played?

EDIT: For example we just started a new game where the player who played a straight BM in our previous campaign is now playing a cleric (and I played an EK with no dip in another class)... according to your poll he couldn't put fighter but instead would have to put cleric since it's the lat class he's played to 4th level or higher... even though he's played a straight fighter to a higher level than he has the current cleric...

Wow, this thread took off.

To answer the question, it's because I couldn't figure out how to make a poll that would take into account having multiple characters of the same class. I suppose I could have added about three options (1 character, 2 characters, 3 or more) after each option, but, then, the poll would be a mile long.

I figured a snapshot of current characters would be just as valid to be honest.

But, you know what, I'm willing to admit that I was wrong. I posted in the OP and in the other thread that I wasn't sure if what I was seeing was limited to my group or was a broader trend. So far, it appears that fighters certainly maintain their appeal at higher levels and apparently aren't just a "dip" class.

Cool.

I am hoping for a few more respondents to the poll as 70 ish is a bit light.

But, just to be clear, I'm not looking for what is the most popular class. I'm looking to see if dipping into fighter is a broader thing or not. Someone earlier mentioned baselining at 5th level. Well, my thought is, if you are willing to spend the time to get four levels in a given class, that's much more than a dip. That's a pretty significant investment. Particularly in light of the idea that most campaigns don't go much beyond 10th level. 4 levels of a given class is a pretty big chunk of your character if you're only playing to 10th.
