Sounds like you’ve gotten good advice. To me it seems like 5e is very forgiving of ‘party holes’ and almost any class can fit into and benefit any party.

You live you learn, I stay corrected

What's funny is I realized that being a dwarf lets you avoid the 10 foot penalty to speed while wearing heavy armor . . . at the cost of a permanent 5 foot penalty. It's really just flavor!

You mean this?

Dwarf Traits . . . Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet. Your speed is not reduced by wearing heavy armor.
Won't that interfere with his warlock spells though? Even if going more melee he'll still want to cast from time to time.

Edit: Wait, just realised you were talking about a tempest cleric not a warlock.

I’m joining a new game. I’ve asked what the others are playing, and this is what I’ve been told:

Celestial warlock
Rogue
Barbarian
Hunter ranger
Moon druid

We are starting at level 1, using the standard array and can use any official book (no UA) except Volos Guide.

Any ideas on what holes this party has? What would fit best?

I have some initial ideas, but want to hear from y’all first.

It sounds like you want to carve out a distinct niche for your character that no one else will overlap with. While there isn't a lot of information here, I am going to wager that those class choices indicate no one is taking a defensive/protective build. I would suggest complimenting the party with a Fighter/Paladin build with the Protection fighting style, you'll have a established role of holding the front line which the other likely frontliners (the Barbarian and shapeshifted Druid) won't be filling.
