D&D 5E Why You May Be Playing D&D Wrong

Anything that happens on the internet should not affect the game you want to play at your own table with your own gaming group. Therefore, no one can say (or care) if you're playing wrong. They're not invited. If you choose to participate in organized play, however, you have no one to blame but yourself.

A very interesting discussion! For my part, I started playing in the 80's and played all versions except 4 as when I looked at it, it just didn't feel right to me for some reason. So far, 5E is my favorite. As a DM, I look at the core rules as just that "core" rules. 1 of those rules is simply that the DM can use rules that he/she needs or make new ones as they seem fit. I tend to let players build the character they want to play and if feats are what they want to use I allow that to happen. The flip side for me is knowing the characters and adapting for them as needed. Just my 2 cp!!

Ehhhhh...the 120,000 member D&D 5E Facebook group just recently had a poll about feats. Obviously not every member voted but it's a pretty decent chunk of answers. As of right now, 889 respondents always use feats, 226 say they use feats about half the time, and 55 people say they don't use feats. Even if the polling skews data pretty strongly, that's still massive difference from what Crawford claimed.

Is this poll about whether feats are allowed, or is it about whether the respondent's character has a feat?

That's the rub really, isn't it? Most players don't take feats until they have maxed out their prime stat, which means most characters under level 8 don't have feats, and most characters never actually reach level 8.

My players usually take a feat first for extra attacks or accuracy. The exception is Dex based Rogues and Monks.

I suspect you would get a similar result here. Sounds like the FB poll got responses from the "hivemind."

It's because a large portion of d&d players are dirty casuals who don't care about whiteroom dpr and optimization, but instead make choices based on "story".

Ugh.

Public service announcement: The above post was made in jest!

Says a lot about internet forums that you had to point out your own joke to avoid people getting upset. :p
