You are missing the point of making the class in the first place.Not really, nothing in it says it can't in a group and he makes it clear, that there is flexibility in the oath.

This is for players who want to play a paladin but don't want the traditional trappings of the class. They don't want to be a "noble knight" cliché. They don't want to be constantly worrying about following a strict code of conduct*. They don't want to be lawful, but don't want to be a blackguard villain either.
Sure, you could refluff it to be just like every other paladin, but there would be no point in it existing at all then.
*The oath is phrased to simply be what most PCs do anyway.
No, nothing requires you to not be a lawful stupid divotion paladin with slightly tweaked and weaker abilities...You can do that, but nothing in the fluff requires that you reject Knighthood, just that you achieve physical excellence and are charming.
