The punch deals damage. And can hit because of the silver.

A "nonsensical" rule would be one that made a punch attack effective.

The blade is silver.

The rules explicitly say, ‘silvered weapons’ are only weapons that the wielder ‘plates with silver’.

It is simply silver over steel.

Just like the ring is silver over flesh.

If you cover you fist with silver it does damage. But it is a gauntlet, and therefore a WEAPON, you are no longer "unarmed".

I dont know if you know what ‘silver plating’ means. But it is a very thin foil over the steel. Think ‘tin foil’ but much much thinner.

The silver itself does zero damage.
