Is it too late?
I have always liked Gamma World, which has been converted into many rules systems. The most recent was called "Omega World" for D&D 4e. You get to play wild-and-wacky in a post-apoc world that need not be a blasted wasteland (mine was more untamed jungle).

I found a supplement for Star*Drive (uses Alternity rules) that made me interested in finding the setting sourcebook. It suggested the ambiance of "re-explore the fallen Empire of Stars", so you can scale the map as you think best.

You're too late, I'm afraid.

And we don't do wild & wacky.

For your future consideration...
I'll recommend Alien... the core book drops in two weeks (preorders in europe are already getting their books, and the US are starting to dribble in, but the PDF was sent to preorders weeks ago). It uses the Year Zero Engine, has a fairly limited map. The book is a great overview of the setting, but also supports three campaign modes with a Call of Cthulhu style "bad stuff will sooner or later eat you, but you may go insane first"... It also supports "cinematic mode" where survival isn't guaranteed. It supports a large subset of the Traveller 2300 tropes.
Produced by Fria Ligan aka Free League.

FL has another compelling setting: Coriolis. An Arabian Nights In Space, per the label, it incorporates a pre-muslim middle eastern vibe, ant a setting of only 36 systems.

I don't know that there is a book for it, but probably some info. I have been considering one in the Bebop universe for some time.
I think it would certainly fit finite space, loose fluff that can be built upon, and small ship crew out to make it big.

There is one, unlicensed, commercial, not even filing the serial numbers off: Bounty Head Bebop

Scum and Villainy (a Forged in the Dark game) has a bounty hunter ship as one of its three campaign modes (the others being a Firefly-sort and a Blakes 7-sort). I always thought it would work well for Bebop.

As far as settings go, The Expanse is a favourite of mine, although I wouldn't use the Green Ronin RPG to play in it. Maybe Mothership or Ghost Orbit. :)

I ruled out Coriolis in my initial post; me and most of my players have experienced a middle east 'vibe' in RL.

There isn’t an RPG for it, AFAIK, but Ben Bova’s Grand Tour novels details the early stages of man’s expansion through the solar system. Nice hard Sci-Fi with a bit of pulp thrown in.
