[space] Planetfall isn't the best option.

It's not gonna be that bad and earth is further back than Venus.

The distance from the sun is not the determining factor here, at all. The determining factor is that Venus' atmosphere is like 99x thicker than ours, and is mostly composed of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. Give Earth that atmosphere, even at our distance, and we'd be like Venus, and there would be no life on this rock.

We're probably looking at dinosaur levels, no ice caps things like that.

We can only hope. But, the potential for runaway greenhouse events is significant.

Dismissing scenarios got us where we are today. Continue to do so at the peril of your descendants.

The psychological factor can't be neglected. You can sell someone on the concept of living on Mars a lot more easily than you can sell them on living in a box in orbit - even if, in practical terms, the box they'll be living in on Mars isn't actually any bigger or more comfortable.

No descendents. State of the world is a contributing factor

Inflicting this world on kids is cruel;).

But at high altitudes, above the cloud cover, there's a region with climate and air pressure similar to that of Earth. Whether or not it would be possible to suspend a balloon colony there is an intriguing one.

IIRC, the altitude where you can reasonably do that is below the sulfuric acid clouds and haze... so your balloon colony is constantly exposed to sulfuric acid... which is a bit of a challenge.

Obviously it's easier to repair even severe damage to Earth than it would ever be to terraform an alien landscape.
Don't say that! The starting premise of the campaign I'm working on is that a bunch of people are fleeing a damaged Earth to an exoplanet that will probably need a bit of work.
