2nd ed wild surge fireball - triple area, triple damage. My PC was burned to a crisp, offending mage out of the area...
Ring of spell storing, level 21 Delayed Blast Fireball, max delay set, cast at max range. Problem was, the adventure was Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, and the targets were police robots...speed 96”.

They closed on us before we knew it, and the spell went off in something like the 3rd of 4th round of combat. Which means, even though it took THEM out, we were plenty roughed up when the BOOM happened.

Ghouls were my favorite monster during the B/X and 1e era.

I TPKed a 1e party with Ghouls. One player had a Ninja from the Dragon magazine. He was the last man standing. He kept missing the last standing ghoul but he always managed to evade the damage from the ghoul with his Ninja special ability. It was ridiculous. They traded blows for 8 rounds until the Ninja failed to evade the damage... very tragic.

They are not harmless in 5E. DC10 Con Save is something a lotof PCs can fail, even at high levels. I threw 8 ghouls at a higher level party as part of a larger encounter. The barbarian decided to take them all on while the rest of the party took on other issues. That barbarian had to be rescued. He was 17th level.
Huh. Did he have a poor Con? Or do you rule that a natural 1 always fails a save?

By the book, a level 17 barbarian with Con 16+ is effectively immune to ghoul paralysis.
