D&D 4E Are powers samey?

Exactly. If something can't be proven to be "samey" because of "subjectivity," why do people make the assertion as if it could be proven?

This right here is the confusing part. @Neonchameleon started a thread asking if 4e powers are samey. I can't imagine that he(?) did so just so people could say "I like 4e!" or "I don't like 4e!" and have those opinions just sit there. A simple poll would have sufficed.

Surely, it was to investigate if the powers were, in fact, "samey" in some distinctive way, and if so, what is distinctive about that way. This would involve coming up with a working definition of the term, comparison with other editions of the game, etc. Providing premises that logically follow to a conclusion. That kind of thing.

(@Neonchameleon , if it turns out this really was just a roundabout way of hearing why people did or didn't like 4e, I do apologize.)

And thus, you get the point.

Had 4e actually done this - simply pooled the similar powers together the way 5e does - then you wouldn't find the powers samey. There wouldn't be fifteen powers that do, more or less, the same thing. There'd be one power that does exactly the same thing that would be accessed by different classes.

However, the same works the other way. Had they made a separate spell and power list for each class in 5e, repeating all of the effects which are more or less the same, then you would find 5e to be samey as well.

Like I said, it's all about presentation. They both have very similar levels of ... well... similarity between the classes. But, because the stuff that's similar isn't listed with any one class, you only see the differences.

Quit extrapolating an incorrect conclusion from my statement... said this earlier and clarified it for you in another post... I am speaking to comparing powers not the game as a whole or anything else in 4e or 5e.

The fact that I've now taken the time to correct you twice means you're either being disingenuous on purpose or you're unable to actually engage with the point I've actually made vs the one you keep constructing and trying to assign to me. We've had this issue before, so how about if you want to reply to me dont rephrase my statement, infer an incorrect conclusion or make any assumptions in general and instead engage my actual point in good faith. Thanks.

Umm, I can only go by what you are writing. You claim that powers that are the same aren't "samey". Why not? The only reason I can think of, since you haven't actually provided any other than to simply state that things are the same aren't samey (:erm) is that because the way the powers are presented.

I'm really struggling to think of another reason why you wouldn't find the fact that every single spell in 5e appears on multiple caster lists not samey.

It really doesn't matter why he started the thread. The rest of us aren't bound by his intent.

You really shouldn't assume things. It could just as easily have been to see who else feels that it was samey and who doesn't.
