How much is Innistrad like Ravenloft? Is it good Gothic?

Innistrad is very gothic, and shares a lot in themes/tones with Ravenloft. There are certainly some differences, but there more similar than not.

Some of these were released as small free pdfs, I think they were maybe Zendikar, Kaladesh and either Innistrad or Shandalar. I wonder if this makes it more or less probable they will ever get a hardback supplement.

You are thinking of the Planeshift articles. They are released whenever an artbook is released for a plane; Ravnica also has an artbook, but no article because it has a harcover book released before.

I'd say Innistrad makes the most sense. Enormously popular, and it hits that gothic vibe that's only be slightly supported (Curse of Strahd is a good adventure, but it's not really like a full setting.) Dominaria is a little too kitchen-sink I think to do a book on, more themed books seem to be the current design path.

My theory is if it has published as Planesifht article then it will not be paperbook yet. The planesiftht articles were like a "balloon probe" to test the reaction of the players. I suggest new articles by the WotC but not about MotG but other Hasbro franchises, at least in the next April's Fool.

If Innistrad is published then lot of fans will complain about Ravenloft had got to be published before. WotC could publish a new edition of "Heroes of Horror" with crunch without lore about Innistrad or Ravenloft.

Other option could be a new M:tG settin inspired in some forgotten Hasbro franchise.

While Alara is my favourite Magic setting (partly because it was the current one when I started and partly because the 5 micro settings are really neat) I think it would make for a pretty bad D&D setting. The natural conflict comes from the conflux which leaves little wiggle room for other plots.

I voted for Dominaria. While many describe it as a kitchen sink fantasy setting I feel it has it's own feel. How many other standard fantasy settings have giant robot wars?

I chose none as Magic doesn't interest me. I picked up Ravnica when it came out and sure I'll mine it for something at some point and same with the setting coming in June, but I'd rather they concentrate on D&D properties. I played MtG once in the late 90s and my reaction was that if Im going to spend time playing a fantasy game Id rather it be a RPG.

I know next to nothing as to the lore of the game or how its played. I understand that they are trying to get MtG players to try D&D and vice versa, but does MtG even translate to D&D rules wise? I guess my question is when someone who normally plays magic and then tries D&D in say Ravnica I wonder if theyre left with the impression that it was cool but somethings missing and it doesn't quite feel like magic?

The art books were discontinued after Ravnica, as well, IIRC. I voted Zendikar, because it is the next Setting we know Magic is coming to soon, and I would expect they will try to keep matching D&D and Magic releases for cross-purposes.

What I really want to see is
WotC make Planescape as a Magic card set, and make an RPG companion.

A good setting is like a sandbox where you can create lots of spin-off and good stories without the main characters. I doubt a setting about a plane too linked with the main lore, because the background may be altered too much by the metaplot of the cards game.

Maybe about the world where the upcoming online videogame is set.

I think the Artbook + Planeshift article made the case for campaign settings going forward. Magic fans will likely buy them for the bigger artwork and lore and D&D fans will buy them for the new setting, races subclasses and what have you.

I picked Zendikar because it looks like a fresh place to spend some time adventuring.
