It occurs to me that a solution to the Ravenloft vs Innistrad issue that fits 5e's style is a horror themed book that explores both settings, plus generical horror tropes. Heck maybe even throw New Phrexia in there as well. I mean

Does anyone else think that could work?

Eh. I honestly think that there is enough room to do both, and would work better seperately. Both do dark fantasy with horror overtones, but are very different as well.

I don't really think Phyrexia fits, as that's not really on theme with the Gothic Horror of Ravenloft and Innistrad. But yes the other two do mesh together pretty well.

I do find it hard to imagine the two truly sharing a book, beyond the fairly normal sidebars of "How to put this is in this setting." But if two settings are ever to really share a book, it's Innistrad and Ravenloft.

If anything, maybe an Innistrad book with sidebars about Ravenloft.

Ravenloft is a lot more diverse then Innistrad, which is really just Gothic Horror + Eldrazi thrown in later. Ravenloft has more races, they have more radically different cultures between domains, ect... Were as Innistrad could fit in as single large Ravenloft domain. There is as much history and lore in many of the core Ravenloft domains individually as Innistrad has in total, so Ravenloft just being a few side bars doesn't really work.

But a book that focuses on both settings and general horror motifs could work very well.

Innistrad is very well set up for low and mid tier play, without any Planar shenanigans. It has room for all the top-down horror themes and tropes, without any of the limitations on of Ravenloft.

What would be cool is a Red Masque of Death Victorian Steampunk setting book...

Almost every key element of Innistrad can be found in Ravenloft except Eldrazi and Angel worship, although Ravenloft does have Bluetspur, a domain whose Darklord is an Illithid Elder Brain.

Both planes have Werewolves check, Fiends check, ghosts check, Vampires check, flesh golems like things check, creepy constructs like dolls/gargoyles check, Evil Plants and Bugs check, monsterous elementals check, murderous insane humans check.

Innistrad Eldrazi monsters.

But Ravenloft has Doppelgangers, Illithids, Drow, Duergar, Death Knights, Liches, Mummies, Illithid Vampires, Demilich, Flame Skulls, Jackleweres, for example. And most importantly Darklords.

Darklord - 1d4chan

For Innistrad you really already have all the rules you need to play it except Eldrazi, it has almost no distinct monster types unlike other MtG settings, no unique playable races, no unique classes or subclasses thanks to Monster Hunter being released already, I mean you could basically just use the art book for Innistrad or the Planeshift article. Maybe you could use a few key NPC stats or an intro adventure. That is about it.

Ravenloft on the other hand has alot more unique rules and variety to it, it's a lot bigger and more diverse then Innistrad.

Innistrad is a younger franchise, "fresher", this allow to add new things when with Ravenloft we have to worry about how to continue the metaplot or when a retcon is neccessary. After the Curse of Strand the next step will be a remake of the modules about the Grand Conjustion. My theory is Innistrad will arrived before because this is easier to be adapted to a title for Netflix or another streaming media service.

There is a open door for the return of "the Mask of the Red Death" in a far future, even with a sourcebook about the pulp age (30-50's years) but d20 system isn't ready yet for enemies driving vehicles with motor, shooting with modern firearms or even superpowers. Of course I would rather a fictional fantasy counterpart because we may feel unconfortable with some parts of our History, for example 1840's Mexico-USA or 1898 Spain-USA war. This IP could be used for horror action-live movies by Enternaiment One, with stories where the public don't have to know about it happens in our Earth or in a fantasy world.

Ravenloft will come back when there were planned how to continue the metaplot, and this may be linked with ideas by the own scripters of Enternaiment One.

The great thing abour Ravenloft though is that the Realms of Dread are constantly Changing as new things are discovered or lost in the mist. Moreover every single Domain has its own unique-ish theme, leading to distinct stories. Even the modules in the Grand Conjunction were standalone adventures. The only real metaplot is Azalins attempts to escape to the Material Realm and it only takes one shift of the mist to have Azalin be lost to the mist entirely

We don't know how Vecna become a god, and I don't know (but become metagame reasons) why lord Soth come back tro Krynn. New domains could be added later, even with XX century technology (a car with motor could be found, but it doesn't work without oil, and sometimes demons or ghosts can control machines). My opinion is the characters Diath Woodrow and Stryx Beestinger, or their ersatz, (from will streaming show Dice, Camera, Action) will be in Ravenloft with a tragic fate and suffering a horrible curse because they did something very wrong.

I have said some times in the past the return of the old franchises will be in a later phase, and linked with multimedia projects, for example teleserie.
