D&D 5E Sing to me of Box Sets, what cool things have been in them, what cool things do you want in them?

The only box sets I have experience with are the classic 5E Starter Set and the Essentials Kit.

Those are pretty great: I don't know the economic feasibility of more box sets like, somewu between those and the rather over the top B&G stiff (neat as that seems). I'd be interested in something in the price range of a standard board game, maybe a Setting intro set with lots of handouts?

We've already gotten two boxed sets for 5E (the Basic set & Essentials), but I would love to see WotC do a homage series of campaign boxed sets - Ultimate Greyhawk, Ultimate Forgotten Realms, Ultimate Dragonlance, Ultimate Dark Sun, Ultimate Planescape, Ultimate Mystara maybe even Ultimate Birthright, Ultimate Ravenloft and Ultimate Al'Qadim - all in 3" deep boxes, with fold-out maps (cloth would be extremely cool), a journal/gazetteer and some artwork cards with interesting details, adventures or whatnot on the back, along with one set of punchout items (named magic items, NPCs, spells, monsters and/or whatnot).

Eberron, at the least, NEEDS a box set as its never had one.

Difficult to store? They're like any other book. Stand on end in between other books. Done.

So here are a select grouping of photos from one part of my multiple RPG shelves. Notice how much more space the 4e style Gamma World box takes on the shelf compared to hardback RPG books.

Now, I will direct your attention to the Beadle and Grimm box set. It dwarfs the dimensions of of the Gamma World box set, and the Beadle and Grimm box is significantly larger than the 3e Magic of Eberron book used as comparison.

Beadle and Grimm’s Descent into Avernus is slightly smaller than B&G’s Dragon Heist, but not by much, and neither fit on the built in bookshelves that I have.

While almost all of my 40+ year old 1e books have traveled with me to multiple residences over my lifetime, neither the Greyhawk Box, nor the grey Forgotten Realms boxed survived.

The Night Below box and Athlas box did not survive past high school.

Not everyone lives forever in one home, with sufficient custom space to store big boxes like B&G Platinum sets and Gloomhaven on bookcases or shelving units.

That might be your situation 3cat, but politely, I suggest if that is the case, it is a rarified circumstance.

Cost, would be my main concern. Beadle and Grimm is not cheap, (some might argue overpriced). I personally don’t need a B&G treatment of the PHB, for example. I use PDFs frankly more often today, a box set PHB for $199.99 has little appeal, to me.

I would be interested in a Beadle and Grimm treatment of the Monster Manual, VGtM, and MToF, that was combined into a single product.

2e’s Monstrous Compendium is a favorite RPG book of mine. Of course B&G seperate and reformat products into booklets, instead of aggregating separate products into one.

I would like to see a box set includes a starter adventure, similar to either Phandalin box. I should have a base like Phandalin and a series of smaller quests along with a larger final quest. I like the options in Essentials, but the town in LMoP. I do not need the starter rules, but you can include some regional material if this is in FR. Throw in some new game information, like in elemental evil.

I like handouts and pictures that show locations along with grid maps for minis.

I've always wanted to do a series of boxes called "D&D Encounters" that contain a fold-out 1-inch square scale map of an exciting location, with monster standees (originally the idea was miniatures, but those are too expensive these days) and punch-out pieces for object that can move (or to modify the map) and a one-sheet or mini booklet that describes an example scenario (or two!) that could be done using the contents.

I should bloody well kickstart it.

Box sets are vanishingly unlikely to happen again (except maybe via kickstarter by 3rd-party publishers here and there), but to be honest i never missed miniatures or cardboard standup (lots of tables don't use them, especially in the Roll20/Rantasy grounds lockdown era). Cloth maps never had a good resolution as paper maps - i want fine detail and stuff labelled in small fonts if necessary! Props like tarokka cards - eh. If you've got an unlimited budget then they're cute to have, but in general there's better things to be spending your printing budget on.

One thing i do miss is the logical division of information into separate books. One book with specific setting rules and game mechanics, one with a PC-knowledge-level-appropriate overview of the setting that can be handed around to players, another with DM-specific setting secrets etc, a couple of page pamphlet of adventure that can be left at home when not in use.
