D&D 5E Is Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden the New D&D Adventure?

It looks likely that the upcoming D&D adventure is indeed an Icewind Dale based storyline called Rime of the Frostmaiden!

It looks likely that the upcoming D&D adventure is indeed an Icewind Dale based storyline called Rime of the Frostmaiden! I can't vouch for the veracity of this, but I was cc'd into a Tweet by Navy DM on Twitter who says they found it on Reddit.

Feel the cold touch of death in this adventure for the world's greatest role playing game.

UPDATE -- the awesome Geek Native ran the small cover screenshot through an image enhancing application, to create the larger image below.

There's a post here on Reddit which says "The DnD Beyond YouTube channel posted a trailer for a new book, Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, then immediately deleted it." The post has been removed since. I found the above image posted by somebody called smightmight, who looks like they screen grabbed it from the video before it was removed.

The Frostmaiden is one of the names of Auril, an evil goddess in the Forgotten Realms. You can read more about her on the Forgotten Realms wiki.

Rime is ice which forms from water droplets on surfaces.

An Icewind Dale setting was the current favourite guess for the location of the new D&D adventure based on various hints from WotC, including this snowy owlbear t-shirt!

Excellent choice, especially with the computer game Baldur's Gate III expected soon, WoTC is stoking the fires of nostalgia with the frozen wastes of Icewind Dale.

Seriously, what did we all expect? Some brand new Campaign Setting? Why would Wizards of the Coast risk that when there is so much safe content to recycle and make money, that the parent company Hasbro, is demanding, from the often non-profitable RPG business.

Icewind Dale is a beloved region, thanks also to the novels by R.A. Salvatore. :)

We all expected Icewind Dale, as we've all been saying for ages.

I was personally kind of hoping for a Flumph centered campaign world. I was really looking forward to the thought of finally getting Flumphville details with Papa Flumph, Jokey Flumph and so on. Like how does Clumsy Flumph not accidentally kill himself by tripping and flipping himself upside down? Inquiring minds want to know!

Also looking forward to a fun phrase-guide specifics like Flumphilicious or Flumpherific.

Oh well. WOTC has crushed yet another dream.

There is LITERALLY A CLICHE SAYING about not judging a book by its cover. We have no idea what such an adventure would include.

If you read or played Legacy of the Crystal Shard, you may have an idea... hopefully is has yeti... that yeti fight was a lot of fun...

Personally, I only hope it isn't a full campaign, for 1st level characters advancing then to 10th or 15th level. My players would love to have some adventures in the wild cold North, but they wouldn't like a full one year campaign on it...

I would love a collection of semi independent adventures, and some good chapters on Icewinter Dale as a setting, NPCs, adventure seeds...
I don't see the problem? Virtually every 1-15 adventure path IS a collection of semi independent adventures, with multiple chapters that can be played as stand-alones. Seems like the best of both worlds, to me?

While I know people were all hoping for "Not Another FR/Sword Coast Region" type book compared to other beloved settings, I'm actually all for Icewind Dale. So I was hoping it would be in that region.

Assuming this is real, and the book is what we think it is, this is a super safe bet for WotC. The adventure/region guide/new subsystem format has been working really well for them, and Icewind Dale is one of the most popular, well known regions of the Realms (between Salvatore and the CRPG). I don't see how it could lose.

It would be neat if we could get one of these in a different setting, though. I vote Eberron.
