Show me. Remember, they don't get Ki until level 2. From lookng at it, they can do exactly what any other PC proficient with short swords can do.

they get martial arts. That’s a bonus action attack at 1d4+3. The only class that’s gets the twf style at level 1 is a fighter.

that leaves other classes doing 1d6+0 with bonus action attack.

Legend
I think monk is just fine. I think it's a mistake to play a shadow monk (which is the one I played) and expect to be a main damage dealer as well. That's not their thing. One of the best at exploration though. My movement allowed me to go all over the battlefield. And when I got shadow step, it was even more insane. I certainly didn't feel like I was low on damage output either.

Currently, I'm playing a shadow sorcerer and fail to see how they suck either. At level 1 your damage is a cantrip anyway, so same as wizard. And 120ft dark vision is great. I've also successfully stayed alive with their I'm not gonna die feature. In fact, last week I prevented a tpk with that feature as after making my save and staying at 1hp, I was able to disable the remaining two bandits and then stabilize the rest of the party

They use spears 2-handed, so they do 1d8+dex bonus, so at 16, that's 1d8+3, and then as noted the unarmed attack is 1d4+3 as well.

I'm just about to start a campaign at level one and made up a genie pact warlock with artificer as a side option. The artificer seems really, really bad but the warlock is doing 1d10 + 1d6 (hex) + 2 (genie's wrath) at-will, every turn. One of the better ranged 1st level characters around, as far as i can tell. The artificer, on the other hand, is sitting at 1d8 + 3 because he's got starting gear and no spells.

Monk: 6.5 + 5.5 = 12.

Rogue 1: Attack action short sword, bonus action short sword, and sneak attack. 6.5 + 3.5 + 3.5 = 13.5.

Fighter 1 twf: Same as monk.

Barbarian 1: great sword attack with rage, 7+3+2 = 12.

They tie most first level non-magic classes, and are not the best damage at first level despite the claim they are (rogues do more, and it's not even fancy or limited like rage).

(1d8+3) + (1d4+3) = 7.5 + 5.5 = 13

Rogue does 6.5 + 3.5 + 3.5 = 13.5 with two short swords and sneak attack.

Monks suck. First level is their best level, and they're STILL not the best even at that level! And most of their subclasses, they only get worse at higher levels relative to other classes.

I like the concept of a monk. I just think they're vastly underpowered in 5e and should see a power boost.

this is the comment I was replying to. I think you just proved they do a lot more damage than what most other characters with a shirtsword can do.
