This is the first one that comes to mind for me (the giant spider above the party). I still use it in my slide shows introducing kids to RPGs.

Never noticed that before. Probably because I've always turned the page or scrolled past quickly.
What I love about it is that it tells a story. One that's a cautionary tale for the PCs that just love to venture off on their own.
It so perfectly encapsulates the "you've met with a terrible fate, haven't you" panic. Even if the DM never used Rot Grubs, just knowing that you were adventuring in a world where they existed was enough.

I love art threads!
I too started in the early 80s, so Erol Otus and Jeff Dee images have places in my heart. When Larry Elmore's DragonLance images came out I was blown away. Between the Chronicles and his art it is easily my favorite D&D setting. I recently ordered a copy of the Chronicles for my 13 year old son to read...they arrived without Larry Elmore covers! Blasphemy! The cover artists is fine...but c'mon...
Anyway, to add something here, let me go with this Larry Elmore piece for the Endless Quest book Return to Brookmere. My father was in the military in the 70s and 80s and at the time, getting a hold of TSR books in English in West Germany wasn't super easy. My grandmother sent me this book as a gift and as my only solo portal into D&D I will always get the warm fuzzies from it.

I loved the skeleton swimming art. During a 2e campaign my players had lock down all the entrances to a village. Then I flipped to this art. The SSS was created Skeleton Submarine squad rose out the lake to attack them the next session.
