WotC WotC is hiring Senior Manager for Diversity, equity and inclusion.

They definitely shouldn't not hire someone because they're white, but even if they did, there's little you can do to prove that happened, unless you were told it was for that reason you were not hired.

It would obviously be good if they hired a non-white for this position, but they shouldn't hire them because of their skin color any more than they would not hire a white person because they're white.

And yet, because it is for Senior Management, it will end up being a while male, maybe a female, if we are lucky. And even if the while male hired is also LGBT, like Jeremy, there will still be an uproar. Sadly, no matter who the hire ends up being, multiple minority groups will be left out and will still attack WotC. Maybe they will get lucky and find a bi-racial minority female who is on the LBGT+ spectrum, which will satisfy the most groups. And that is not me being snarky, but just honest on how far I see this situation has gone.

People will complain no matter who gets this job, because it's very difficult to appeal to every minority when you hire someone for this job, they shouldn't hire based on that, either. Sure, people will complain, that's bound to happen, but I don't think it's going to make a difference.

In the United States, approximately 58% of HR managers are women while it's overwhelmingly white at 70%. There's no real distinction between manager and senior manager in the statistics because job titles can be misleading. I think it's weird any time I run across someone whose job title is manager and they have no direct reports. Who the hell are they managing?

You're never going to make everyone happy and that's just a fact of life. Look at the cynical reactions from many people here to the announcement that WotC is looking to hire an HR manager DEI.

Mod Note:

Folks,

The one card is not material in consideration a new Senior Manager for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for WotC. Neither is it generating constructive discussion. The way this goes is that people continue digging in on the card, and butting heads, and then butting heads on anything else mentioned in the thread, and then people get warnings and banned from the thread an probably nobody ends up happy.

So let it go, please and thank you.

This is...grossly pessimistic and cynical.

Not hiring someone because they are white is a good way to get sued. Plus, a white person can just as capable as any other person at this position.

Can be, theoretically. Is likely to be? I don't think so.

They are hopefully looking for a person who understands, really and thoroughly understands, issues of folks who are disadvantaged and discriminated against in our culture. While it is possible for that to be a white dude, the odds are against a person who is not generally subject to discrimination to as fully understand as someone who does experience it personally.

That is good to know. But is that management in general, or specifically senior management? There is that whole glass ceiling thing, after all. Maybe we need to change that to a stained glass ceiling, to represent all the colors and other groups who have the same problem as women.

Sorry, but that just seems how the whole country has escalated on things. A few years ago, a black, straight woman could have gotten this job and all but the fringe of the minority and LGBT+ groups would have cheered the hire. But today? It just feels like everyone will only be satisfied if the person is exactly like them. Which is so opposite the idea of inclusivity that we all want to see happen.

They manage things and processes that are complicated, rather than people - product mangers, program managers, project managers, relationship managers, release managers, and so on.
