A barbarian should need to rage.
A paladin should need to smite.
A ranger should need to... well, whatever they can do!
what does the 5e patch job contribute to a discussion of slots in 3e and earlier? Why doesn't it matter?

Okay. Here'sanother idea.
Called Shots.
What if called shots is a high level fighter thing.
Everyone uses HP to defend themselves by dodging, parrying, blocking, using raw flesh, and just being lucky.
Except the 15th level fighter can go for the eyes and your HP cannot do jack squat about it. Your ACand CON save better be good or you are losing an arm vs Hercules. Paris didn't get lucky, he shot Achilles with a called shot that bypassed HP.
All those famous fighters of myth and legend?
Decapitation. Decapitation. Decapitation. Decapitation. Decapitation. Decapitation. Decapitation

Barbarbarians iconic OOC proficiency is Athletics and Intimidation.
Paladins just know religion and lie detection.
So what's fighter's
Is the problem that the Fighter's skills and tools are missing from the game?
